I am so confused. The beginning of this book opened like the middle of an action movie, expecting me to know everyone and their pasts and not explaining anything. The scenes/chapters were much too short so I felt like I was reading in fast-forward, therefore I'm sure I skipped over vital information, though I know I read every word on the page. I even had trouble understanding Horton's writing style as her sentences were long, full of big language, and she was constantly comparing to something else. For example, these are the very first two sentences to chapter one, “The ringing phone interrupted my first good night's sleep in two weeks. My hearty raced, and the Sixth Commandment echoed through my groggy brain.” Never explains why the Sixth Commandment was the first thing she thought of, never explains anything.
According to GoodReads, this is book 2 to a series called “Parched”, but if this is a part of a series (which would make sense), then the author and publisher should put that somewhere on the book, otherwise, they are going to have a lot of confused readers therefor having negative reviews. After all, on the front page it just says, “A Novel of Suspense”. There is not even a list of other books written by the author in the front or back of the book.
I hate it when my reviews are full of negativity but I'm afraid that I honestly have nothing good to say about this book, as I was too confused to even get halfway into the story and the scenes with characters so brief that I don't even remember their names. I am rating The Brothers' Keepers 2 out of 5 stars for either a badly written novel or lack of displaying that this is not where the story begins, whichever applies. I will try to find and read the first book, if there is one, and see if that clears up the confusion, but other than that, I will probably not be reading any other books by this author.
“Despite my negative review, I am very grateful to the author/publisher for providing this book in return for an honest review, which I have given. All comments and opinions are my own.”
