Interesting approach to a character many people think they “know”. I enjoyed seeing a bit more of Jim's early years, and even the start of his career had some good nuggets. I don't consider myself a die-hard fan, but I have read a good many of the Star Trek books that are out there, and have watched the episodes and the movies multiple times. I did enjoy the “snippets” of well-known events from the character's POV, but after a while, it began to feel more like an overview than an autobiography. Which, given the circumstances (fictional character in a fictional universe), I suppose is to be expected, if one was being limited to more canon-esque topics. I also enjoyed reading about the over-arching themes present in the character's experiences, and how impactful they were; this tied everything together. A fun read, although sometimes a bit on the depressing side. Oh well, I guess that's “reality” for you, even in a fictional universe.
