This book lays out a lightweight approach to pacing, tying five key plot beats to word count goals, and offers some solid guidance on structuring your editing process. It also sprinkles in general writing advice, making it a handy read for beginners or anyone looking to streamline their process without wading through dense theory.
If you’re the kind of writer who just throws ideas at a page and hopes something vaguely coherent sticks (guilty), then this might just be a godsend.
Hands up—I haven’t read many writing craft books before (and finished even less). But this one was a breeze. Short enough to finish in a couple of sittings, with a easy conversational style that feels more like chatting with a well-organised writing friend.
If you’re a seasoned writer who has plowed through (and actually finished) an entire library of craft books, you’re probably not the intended audience for this one. But if you’re just starting out or prone to a bit of literary chaos, it’s a great way to introduce some structure without sucking the joy out of writing.
A refreshing, no-fuss guide for anyone who wants a bit of direction without feeling shackled to a rigid system. Would defo recommend.
