It's very easy for those of us whose families first arrived in America several generations ago to be ignorant of what is going on along our southern border. Even those of us who live near the border don't have a lot of knowledge about the situation. Who are these people coming north? Why are they coming here? What do they bring with them? What do they hope to find here?
Valeria Luiselli humanizes the border story in this book, Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay in Forty Questions. She takes on a job as a volunteer translator for children who have been picked up for illegal immigration. In the process, she asks and translates the replies for forty questions immigrant children are expected to answer. Luiselli shares the stories of these children in this book.
the stories are important and the book is educational.
3 stars because..well, after coming from ‘Evicted' this seems pretty light in its overall commentary, I guess.
