Incredibly powerful in both the drawings and storytelling. I'm glad I picked this up in the bookstore. I couldn't stop reading and it made me feel a lot of things. It is a heavy story but definitely worth the read.
Emily Carroll's art, as always, is fantastic. I haven't read the original novel, but it works beautifully as a graphic novel. The emotional bite is razor sharp, the story is haunting, and I teared up a ton. This is not my first rodeo reading about SA, nor about such young kids' traumas around SA, but I thought this was such a beautiful and heartwrenchingly realistic look into a time and place of a high schooler in this situation.
Yes, the ending was very positive... very “things worked out and will continue to work out!” But to be honest, I think I needed that.

This “updated” graphic novel adaptation is just as hard-hitting and heartbreaking as I remembered it. Emily Carroll was the perfect artist to illustrate this story. Beautiful work. I have to reread the novel now. Highly recommend.
This adaptation was stunning. The artwork was phenomenal. I actually found this more impactful than the novel itself, which is a first for me.
I recall seeing the movie years ago and thinking it was good, now I want to read the original novel. But, I think this story really was a perfect match for the graphic novel format. Melinda's thoughts and emotions are boiled down to the essence, and the art is so expressive and dynamic.
There really aren't words to do justice to this. I really have zero negative things to say about this. It was as perfect as it could be.

The graphic format works well here, especially because the story is already such a standout and 20 years later is still so strong and relevant. Great update that will hopefully bring more teens to this powerful story. Will need multiple copies for the library.
Confession: I never read Speak. I knew the story from talking to the teens, so I skipped it. Second confession: I am a total fangirl of Emily Carroll. This was excellent! Loved it!
