We find ourselves in the small village of Dwerry where Patch and Ctain have grown up together. One day Patch (who is a notoriously good climber) falls out of the tree he's in. The reason? He saw the Sorrow Man. Ctain believes he's lying and is seeking attention. Somehow there is hate from Ctain towards Patch. Later the king's soldiers appear and demand the children of the village and since the order is refused, the village is destroyed. Now the journey begins for Patch as he is trained by the Sorrow Man to retrieve the children enslaved and kill the king.
I wanted to like this story a lot more but there is so much packed into it with very little character development. For instance, Ctain was found and taken in by Patch's family and they grew up together. You would think they would be the best of friends, brothers. For some reason we go from them hanging out together to Ctain hating Patch with no explanation as to why or how that even came about. It was literally from one page to the next, they were friends then enemies.
Then there is the relationship with Bekka. We see the beginnings of true love in the making. Then the village attack happens and he is gone for years, training with the Sorrow Man. He shows back up and finds Bekka trying to escape from soldiers, and they just jump into having sex. Hmmm...ok.
Overall I really enjoyed the premise of this story but would have liked to see more exploration into the characters. This ends on a cliff hanger which means this is headed towards a series so maybe in the next story we will see more.
I was contacted by Zion Blue and asked if I would read and review this short story. My opinions are my own and I was not given this book in exchange for my review. I read this through Kindle Unlimited.
