Far future of the Cosmere and we get some interesting clues as to what is happening on the other "main" worlds. Dusk is a great protagonist, it is nice to have a more quiet one compared to the talkative others Sanderson is accustomed to giving us. There's a lot in here despite the page count, maintenance of cultures and traditions, passing down skills and preparing for a technological future. Interesting aviary characters too...
I didn't expect going into this short story that I would come out of it loving the world that it takes place in and that I would be not want it to end but that is exactly what happened.
Brandon Sanderson is a master at world building and he has done it again here. The creatures inhabiting this world shine and are arguably the main characters of this story, along with the land itself.
My only issue would be that the ending fell a little flat for me but everything else made up for it.
I hope that we get more stories in the Cosmere from this system in the future.
7/10
Pretty good for a short story. Quick introduction to the world and leaves doors open for later expansion. I would have liked a bit more clarification before the end though.
I love it when Sanderson creates a world with its own ecology and species. It's impressive how he could draft a new one compressed only in 50 pages!
On the other hand, this novella is too short for a decent characterization and I could not connect to the characters and the story as much as I wanted. I hope we can get more of it in a fully structured novel.
Un relato que igual se siente muy “cortado”, pero que me entretiene mucho cada vez que lo leo. Grande ocaso , nada más que decir.

Super short but super good. The setting of this story was so unique for the Cosmere (and in general). The relationship between the trappers, Aviars, trees, predators was very nicely described for something that was this short.I'd love to read a proper novel set on this world. This story and [b:Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell 21411388 Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell Brandon Sanderson https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1426179951l/21411388.SX50_SY75.jpg 40712188] were the best ones yet in the book. The upstream place they went to was a perpendicularity? Also wondering if the Ones Above are from another Cosmere world we know about or someone from this world only.Read this as part of [b:Arcanum Unbounded 34226341 Arcanum Unbounded Brandon Sanderson https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1532120976l/34226341.SY75.jpg 48765829].
2023 Update:
I was looking forward to rereading this short story again, but I chose the wrong format to relive it. GraphicAudio never seems to work right for me. The audio drama experience is something I'm trying to pick up every so often and in this case, I couldn't enjoy Sixth of Dusk this time around. I'll need to reread this physically next time to raise it back to 5 stars.
__Original Review (2020):A Sanderson short story that showcases a grim version of the Polynesian culture, which ties critically to the magic system in the novella, which, of course, is awe-inspiring. I shouldn't expect less from Brandon. I read this in the Arcanum Unbounded, and found it to be one of my favorites from that collection.I usually find myself in the minority of people who actually love a good short story. Some stories aren't meant to be looked into further. Much like one that can envelope a character's journey with a hint of color that would be able to give a luminous payoff in the end. That is exactly what I found in Sixth of the Dusk.__

This is by far one of my favorite Sanderson short stories. I would love to see more stories set on the world of the First of the Sun.
This was my first Cosmere short story to read and I absolutely loved it! I loved the dark tone of this story. I'm super intrigued by the Ones Above.
One of my biggest pet peeves for the longest time in the fantasy genre was the lack of imagination, by which I mean that most everything I read was European middle age with magic. It's FANTASY! There should be a wide variety of worlds and creatures, stories that take to to a wide variety of fantastic places. Brandon Sanderson is part of the reason I've come back to more traditional fantasy after a break because he seems to have a never-ending supply of imaginative worlds to offer and Sixth of the Dusk is another example of that talent.
It's too short - as all novella's are in my opinion, but there is so much packed into it, that it can be forgiven for being a quick read.
A whole unique world is built in under 100 pages, along with an interesting magic system that although I wished there was more explanation for, it still manages to be amazing.
The characters were okay in this one, I didn't think they were the best that Sanderson has written, but with such a short story, it still amazes me that they are as well formed as they are.
A worthy addition to the Cosmere and a place I hope he visits again in the future so we can find out more about the fate of Dusk, his birds and his magical jungle.
Let's take a look at Brandon Sanderson. Let's forget the Cosmere. Let's forget the world building. Let's for a second even forget magic systems. Sixth of the Dusk just proves that at the core of it Brandon is a story teller. He weaves characters who are memorable, he wells up a range of emotions and he teaches you some lessons about life. That he does this within the three elements we chose to forget at the start of the review are just another feather in his cap. So go ahead and read this Novella. Read it with a smile on your face. Read it and pine for more
