Stunning end to an exceptionally engaging series, I devoured these like there was nothing else I had to do but sit and read, which... is not remotely true, whoopsie. But man alive I had a good time with these. Jericho Barrons might be one of my fav book boyfriends of all time.
4.5 stars for all the twists and turns and sheer unputdownability of this last book in the M+J saga. Glad that references to “Deep South” and ridiculous generalizations about today's generation were kept to a minimum. Not so glad they were replaced with inaccurate and ridiculous references to feeling “schizophrenic” and that that somehow involves multiple personalities. Two VERY DIFFERENT conditions folks! Wish movies and books would stop doing this already. We have the internet - no excuse for ignorance here... But despite these irritations of which there were not a few - Mac and Jericho really brought it home for me. They truly save the series and have such a fun dynamic. World building was also pretty great and I loved some of the creative scenes involving illusions. Fun fun fun! So while it didn't have me fawning over the sheer brilliance in writing - I'm here for it - and will give the next few books in this world a chance too. I'm fairly certain that even with a few eyerolls, I'll have fun. :)
The story is essentially enjoyable, but some of the characters have gone stale. Dani is a great character, but the story told from her perspective—the prose used—is incredibly irritating. I know it's meant to sound like a kid, but it's over the top. There was too much telling and not enough showing: it seemed like certain situations were contrived just so a conversation could take place that explained things. I usually like first-person storytelling, but here it grated. If there's going to be such detailed, long dialogue, I think third-person works better; otherwise, it just doesn't make sense to me.
I keep hearing the series has ended—and indeed, this book certainly feels like a conclusion, of sorts—but more *fever books keep getting published. I'm kinda confused, but I'll keep reading. O.o Speaking of conclusions, it felt very, very weird to me to omit resolution between Dani and Mac from this book.

You know how we say “ALL THE FEELS” about books all the time? This book makes that look like an understatement. I elated, crushed, enthralled, repulsed, confused, amused, and surprised. I cried both sad and happy tears. Quite the emotional roller coaster, but hands down, my favorite book of the series.
Side note: NEVER in my life have I been so tempted to look to the back for spoilers. And speaking as the world's biggest spoiler-phobe, that's saying something.
This was by far the best of the books. Almost hated to see it end. This one had me guessing and changing my mind as to who MacKayla was.
