gonna be honest i've never read the great gatsby so i have no concept of how true to the original this one is as far as story goes but it was enjoyable though i wasn't super invested, i do really love this authors writing style
The idea was good I guess, but the execution really wasn't great. Especially if you've read and loved The Great Gatsby, this will fall flat, and you'll be left disappointed. It's just not enough to make characters queer and hope for the best.
Clever and thoughtful queer reimagining of [b:The Great Gatsby 46171 Rayuela Julio Cortázar https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1655824803l/46171.SY75.jpg 1794732]. Narrator Nick is a transmasculine Latino, his cousin Daisy is passing as White, and other characters who are coded as queer in the original are freed up to be themselves (within societal restrictions of course). F. Scott Fitzgerald's musings on the American Dream take on new dimensions when race, gender, and sexuality are factored into the equation. Plus HEAs for almost everyone! (except Tom Buchanan, who is just as odious now as he was 98 years ago)
Wow! Wow! Wow! I gobbled this up. It was everything I didn't know I needed. The representation was mind blowing. We had a whole cast of gay, trans, lesbian characters and most were Latine! I never expected to enjoy a classic remixed, but boy am I glad I gave this a chance. I loved it so much!
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Children's Publishing Group for granting me an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Self-Made Boys by Anna-Marie McLemore releases September 6, 2022!
wow these YA classics remixes are KILLING IT. This was so gorgeously written and for me really enhanced the original while being its own beautiful thing. And I loved all the historical details about queer and trans lives in the 20s. I loved the depth granted to each character.
