I love Saga, but this is the worst volume yet. It seems to be going the Strangers In Paradise route of twist after pointless twist to keep the story going a few more issues. I hope Vaughan and Staples coem back from the hiatus reinvigorated with a plan to bring the story to a natural end.
I can not put this more succinctly that the only word to say regarding reading this beautiful book and series thus far is that it fucking has destroyed me. DESTROYED.
Story
I didn't read very many comics anymore. When I was younger I consumed a lot of superhero stuff, but then I pretty much rolled off with a few exceptions. Then along came Saga. I still don't read a ton of comics, but this series has lead me to pick up several other great series.
With the announced hiatus of this series and the lament of friends of mine about the cliffhanger ending, I debated waiting to pick this one up, but inevitably, there was no way could do that.
This was another great entry in the series, but they've all been great. I don't love the cliffhanger, especially with the series hiatus, but if there is any series worth waiting for it's this one.
Artwork
Fiona Staples is easily my favorite comic artist. Her characters are so great, and often so disgusting. She does such a great job matching Mr. Vaughan's vision that I don't think anyone else could draw it properly. I've read a few other series Mr. Vaughan has written and this one easily has the best artwork.
I still enjoy Saga a lot, with the gripping plot and brilliant characterisations.
I'm still not sure how I feel about Marco and Prince Robot. Even though I really liked these two characters, I wasn't really sad about them dying. And I think it's because, in a way, Saga has desensitized me towards death. Too many characters I liked have died so far that I fear I might stop caring. I considered giving this volume 4 starts instead of 5 because of that.
5 stars Oh my god. That ending. I'm heartbroken. I can't believe we have to wait AT LEAST a year to know what will happen next. I understand the need for the creators to take a break, but did they have to leave us on SUCH a sad note?
Todavía estoy procesando ese final.
Los últimos dos tomos casi me matan. Pero, ¿Qué es lo que ha pasado? y ¿Cuánto tengo que esperar para saberlo?
Mucho mejor que los anteriores.
AAAAAAAAAAGHHHH

AAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Fwiw, I read issues 49-54, which will become Vol. 9 (this), which comes out in Oct 2018?
Anyway. GODDAMNNNNNN.
I've been reading Saga since 2013. Sometimes with months- or even year-long gaps in between issues and volumes. Sometimes the plot meanders. It's always gorgeous and inventive and the dialogue is always fun. I LOLed in these issues (until I was wracked by gasps and sobs). But sometimes the plot wanders. Sometimes, though (especially in the beginning), my dudes, it is a FREIGHT TRAIN.
AND BOYO TODAY I GOT SLAMMED BY THE FREIGHT TRAIN
