River of the Gods

Very good writing and on an interesting subject. I was a bit disappointed there wasn't more around the actual discovery and I had a ton of questions around the 97% mark which, surprisingly were all answered in the last 3%. Much like a murder mystery.

I heard an interview with the author on Fresh Air and was really interested to delve further into the story. I ended up not being as enthralled with the book as the fantastic interview, which I recommend folks check out to hear about these historical anecdotes and seemingly fictional characters.

4.5 stars. Absolutely riveting and chocked full of some of the most bizarre and unbelievable adventures in a time when exploration reigned supreme. I am beyond fascinated with the trio of main characters here - namely the enigmatic Richard Burton.

Millard is a fine writer who picks interesting topics. This is not her best work. Too much woke-ism with a little preaching here and there. The chronology is sometimes confusing as well.
