Min Lee has it all on the surface, until she looks in the mirror and sees someone else looking back at her.
Min Lee is an underground artist who works in advertising during the day. She has a boyfriend at the same company. She is moving up in the company. Min should be happy. Yet every time she catches a glimpse of herself, she cringes.
Min has never been happy with how she looks. One night while free drawing, she draws herself in a casual pose with her body hidden within itself. Her body looks nondescript. Min posts the artwork on her underground art page and it is a huge hit. All of the women think the guy in the artwork is “hot”.
This starts the active thought process for Min of gender identity and what it means. One of her diehard fans barges into her life causing further confusion for Min as Bree brings out feelings Min has never felt before.
Let me warn readers that Under My Skin (B00OKZVCVC, 2014) by A.E. Dooland is a long book at 688 pages. Now having said that, it is an illuminating story of a person's journey through gender identity conflict and resolution.
It took me a bit to warm up to Bree as she is very in your face (laugh). I think I know exactly how Min felt in the story. Yet Bree sheds light in her own way on Min's tale. Bree actually makes Min human and puts Min in touch with their emotions.
There are times I was shaking my head and times I was sad. Overall, I was glad I took this journey with Min. It shed light for me on other's journeys and where I stand within my own journey. I am not transgender, but gender identity is not just about being man or woman.
If you want laughter, emotions, and something that will move your heart - then pick up Under My Skin. Min will get under your's. ✶✶✶✶
