Got this book at my middle school book fair on a whim and oh my goodness, I've been in love ever since. I absolutely ADORE Red Queen! It is my favorite and the only series I actually purchased every book of. What makes Red Queen such a great book is the plot twist at the end - when Maven turns out to be the one to betray Mare. Every time I read that part, I swear I get goosebumps! Moreover, the overall political intrigue, the testy love triangle, and the overshadowing rebel movement really made this book all the more fascinating. Apart from the plot, Aveyard did a wonderful job of writing as the book is easy to comprehend while also being interesting for any age group. Overall, I must admit that this is one of the best books I've ever read in my life, and I'll definitely be rereading it for the 1000th time :)

There were quite a few obvious plot holes throughout the book. The most glaring one in my opinion, is the fact that Mare goes from being ‘ordinary' to having superpowers and , overnight, she seemingly gains perfect control of these new powers without much difficulty. There's no sense of hardship in learning to control her new ability, she seems to just suddenly be able to wield her powers without a second thought.
The most unlikely thing in my opinion is Mare's ability to plan a whole revolution right under the nose of the Queen (who has the ability to read minds), and never once stops to think “hey, it's really strange that the Queen isn't doing anything to stop my plans”. The final battle is so contrived, it was almost painful to read through it. Mare, who has spent the whole book being protected by the princes, suddenly has this incredible power to her disposition, turning the tide of the battle and saving Cal's life. Very unlikely. The resistance members seem to have survived death so many times, including the last ambush where Cal's 5000 soldiers stormed their hiding place...and yet every one survived. This is completely unbelievable and shows exactly where this series is going. The plot twist was clear as day, and so is the future of the revolution.
All I have to say is damn. I remembered this book being good but the last 70 pages probably tore something in me. I don't remembering shedding tears at any point previously, but I did this time.
It always brings me back to one thought though, how do people love Maven? He is a red flag, the biggest red flag to exist. Normal people like Cal aren't even given a second look and it surprises me so much. People hold completely different expectations in book characters.
My original rating was 5 stars but I'm now shoving it down to 4 because the book is no equal of ouabh and tbona, unfortunately
It took me a long time to read this book because the beginning was just so boring and really seemed to drag on and on. I had actually stopped reading it to the point where I didn't think I would ever pick it up and finish it. But, closer to the middle, it started getting interesting enough to where I wanted to finish it. I'm glad I did. It was pretty good and the end I wasn't really expecting. Currently waiting on the next installment.
Red Queen
☆☆☆☆
Status: Finished
Type: More than three books
Series: Red Queen
Mare Barrow lives in a world divided by the color of blood. There's the Reds, people with Red blood, they are the laborers of the Kingdom of Norta. Then there's the Silvers, people gifted with superhuman abilities, they are very rich and rule Norta. But Mare is different, she a Red, but she has abilities like a Silver. One day, Mare gets a job at the palace as a servant and, in front of hundreds of Silver Elite, unveils her ability, which is lightning. Now she has pretend to be a Mareena Titanos, made up silver nobility, while secretly join a rebel group, called the Red Dawn.
Victoria does a wonderful job at world building and I like the idea of Queenstrail. Although, the whole society is divided by this thing has already been done, Victoria's superb writing makes it feel like it's not a cliché. I just adore the cover and the way the blood is dripping down the crown. It's just gorgeous! Although, I liked this book, unfortunately I just couldn't get into the sequel and therefore, will not be reading the rest of the series, but I will watch the movies when they come out.
Pros
• Mare is a really strong and brave throughout the entire book. While other may see that as poor character development, I think it really defines Mare.
•Queenstrial, I really like the idea of it
•Mare power is electrokinesis, which is one of my favorite powers!
Cons
•There is a love triangle, I don't think it was bothersome.
Favorite character: Maven
The fire prince is really nice, but he's does something that makes me sad. (I'm not telling! :) )
Least Favorite Character: Queen Elara
I cannot stand her!! She manipulative and evil!
I rate Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, four stars out of five.
Loved the world-building, how characters describe unknown objects with the words at their disposal. This reminded me of Hunger Games books. Very enticing and interesting to read, but I wish there was more detail on what is going on between Cal and Mare, because the tension builds up and instead of a well-deserved "release" there are very few details and sentences, and it makes that particular storyline a little imbalanced, in my opinion. I know romance is not the focus of this book series, but I really needed a few more sentences to feel better what is going on in the characters' heads.
That aside, I was hooked, finished the first book in 3 or 4 days.
Wow. This book is amazing. An amazing plot, and amazing characters. Can't wait to continue.
DNF this one. Too many cliches and the plot twist is fairly obvious.
While this one is still a "special boy/girl" sci-fantasy, I did like the constant edging of foreshadowing betrayal immediately followed by descriptions of how nice a character is. In fact, when a significant betrayal did come, I didn't believe it and more than halfway expect to find it reversed later on the series. The ratio of fantasy to sci-fi felt weird to me but I couldn't say why.
This was honestly a really interesting book. It contains a lot of plot twists, things I really didn't think of. I couldn't stop reading this because it had a lot of cliff hangers at each chapter lol- I really recommend!
god this book is so fucking good. maven is my adoptive son who actually didn't do anything wrong i promise and cal is STILL the same heartthrob to me at 18 as he was at 13. sooo glad i reread
“i could set this world on fire and call it rain” ABSOLUTELYYYYYY.
I have mixed feelings about this book, there were parts where I was extremely bored, but the good parts and the plot-twist made up for all of it, so I decided to give it 4 stars.
I was rooting for Maven and Mare.
Now? I'm rooting for nobody
I have very mixed feelings about this book. It's highly derivative to the point if you've read any YA dystopian fantasy of any kind...you'll likely know exactly where it's going and how it's going to end. For me as well with YA, one of the biggest pet peeves I have is how relationships and romance will be shoehorned in to advance the plot...but hey at least it's kicked up a notch with a love square! Triangles are so passé.
I don't want to sound like I hated this book though cause that's not the case. As I said mixed feelings. I love a good story about throwing off the yoke of oppression and confronting the powers that be. Plus superpowers in the mix that are passed down through blood? I'm there for it. To see those that are considered less than because of their blood rise up and show the silvers that they aren't inferior or as weak as they think. That's a story that I wanted and still want to read. The ending, while predictable, did a lot to bolster my hopes for this series as we moved beyond the love square that was so stifling in the majority of the novel.
I'll be continuing on for at least one more book because the potential is definitely there.
Not as good as I expected, but I liked it. I was waiting for the incredible plottwist, but it wasn't really predictable. I liked the world building, but it wasn't as much as I hoped it would be.
I thought it would be a “selection” vibe, but it wasn't. I think that's why my rating isn't as high as I hoped it would be.
good book (: i loved the storyline & the characters, but felt like some wordings were repetitive but not enough to be annoying.
DNF @50%. This broke my spirit: ??? Times move slowly when you???re waiting for something good, so naturally the days fly by as the dreaded ball approaches.??? The premise is a 30 something???s fever dream. Plot consists of a MadLibs style melange of popular teen movies. Do you relate to going to school? Do you want to wear a leotard and train with others in an arena? Do you relate to being part of the downtrodden class? Do you instantly accept your higher position in life when the ruling class makes you one on them? Do you fall in love with anyone that is slightly decent to you? Are super powers and a secret underground revolution the only way you can fight against the upperclass?
If you said yes to all of these, this book is your jam.
It is a fun book of you haven???t seen or read anything. It will be a great movie series???get Anya Taylor-Joy, Ansel Elgort, and Tom Holland.
Thanks for reading,
Clay
I really liked the book! I suspected the plot twist from half of the book but the execution still surprised me! I need to start the second ASAP!
Likeable characters and hateful ones, you know who.
Can0t wait to see what happens next!
Hunger Games + Divergent + Game Of Thrones.
I really enjoyed this book, but it is very obvious that the author got most of her ideas from the above books

I feel like on paper this seems like something I'd really enjoy, but I was just bored.
Very enjoyable. Not really mind-blowing but i liked it a lot and that's what matters.
However, I didn't click with the heroine or most of the characters (Maven was a cool character though). But i really liked the political intriguing plot.
This is not for me I'm telling ya...but I will read the 2nd book to it so I can see what happened. The plot twist was trash. Already knew what was gonna happened. Y'all hyped the plot twist up so much and I found out it was horrible... I didn't even make a face...my face was straight... I had a mean mug aka like a mugshot I will take if I ever go to prison. Somebody said the ending was mind blowing.... where...where was it mind blowing at...tell me bc I might of missed it...oh wait I didn't bc it was trashed like u can predict it and u will Be right
Plus it was boring... I didn't want to dnf bc I wanted to know what happened
