A compelling premise that is let down by the character of Svetlana. Throughout the book I didn't know whether to be appalled or impressed that the author had created such a despicable, hypocritical and irredeemable character. By the end, the fact that I was actively rooting against her made the last act more frustrating than thrilling.
Loved this gripping tale of the Rockhopper crew in the mid-21st century, investigating Saturn's moon Janus as it unexpectedly leaves orbit. Their journey, filled with political tension and alien encounters, showcases themes of exploration and human ingenuity. However, I'm quite confident it won't take hundreds of years and alien species for us to develop rejuvenation technologies!
concept ok, personal drama hella lame, why didn't the musk dogs just take it if they were planning on busting out? the humans were literal helpless garbage
Well this was a disappointment. This book throws you in an awesome mystery and provides 0 answers at the end. 3/4 of the book is wasted with pointless soap opera like human drama frenemy BS. The author could have used those pages to explore the sci-fi elements and actually provide some answers ans closure but instead he chose to bore us with 2 women pickering. There are some interesting things happening in part 3 of the book but it was condensed on a few pages in favour of f...-ing human drama.

A lot was happening. Perhaps a bit too much, I did not feel it tied its stories together by the end. I enjoyed it.
As usual, from Alastair Reynolds, some great ideas. However I thought the ending was a bit confused, with several unresolved questions. I can't say what they are without spoilers.
This is one of the best books i've ever read. It isn't the most complicated story but the combination of a fast pace, great character building and the odd mystery make the 500 odd pages fly by. It's also nice to read a space sci-fi book where the 3 main characters are women. I thoroughly recommend this book even to non sci-fi fans as the sci-fi elements are secondary to the characters relationships and how they are affected by being thrown into an unexpected and crazy situation.
