Like the story and liked the characters but I struggled a lot to get into the first 200 pages of the book, I can't really pinpoint if it was Laura's writing not clicking with me or if the beginning of the book was really hard to get into.
Will still read the second book as I really liked Pae as a main character :)

This was so good!! I know a lot of people have compared this to The Hunger Games, but I found very little to link them. There's so many books out there which have trials so can be compared to a lot of books, but can also stand by itself as a great book!
I was immediately immersed in the writing, it wasn't the most detailed world building but the strength here are the characters. I liked all of them and enjoyed learning about the different abilities they have.
The trials were entertaining and I loved the face off towards the end. Then the end!! Loved it!
I can't wait for the next one
dun dun dun not my favorite but SO much potential. I am hoping and praying now that the author has a publishing deal there will some significant editing and overlook in the plot department.
This book was simply not revolutionary but I don't read YA so it was still sooo fun for me. The basis being girl who is has no powers (which is outlawed) is forced within these deadly trials against the powerful. While these trials are going on, she is forced to live within the palace of the kingdom leading to a delicious love triangle between the future king and his future enforcer and they are BRRROTHHEERRSSS. The romance was the highlight of this story and when we added Kitt in there hehehe. My love.
Plenty of negatives. The writing style fell flat for me but this is debut novel so I give grace. Typos and formatting issues a plenty. Minute world building especially within the politics and reasons behind stuff it was so confusing and just rushed??
I need book 2 asap rocky.
The trials were a bit weird and I was expecting girlie pop to come up with some powers at some point. She is in fact powerless. Boooo.

Editing this three weeks later. Knocking down 1 star since upon reflecting, this is not a great book. As Leonie said (way more concise than myself) “no worldbuilding, no lore, no atmosphere, nonsensical and superficial politics, bland cardboard characters, romance that had no basis other than to fit the ‘enemies-to-lovers/knives-to-throats' checkbox”
3 stars! Unique premise, but I feel like the author was writing with the goal of being the next booktok viral romantasy instead of an actual good story and quite literally lost the plot because of it.
Imagine if the throne of glass competition in the first book was a hunger games style contest. Now imagine the plot is a convenient way to string trope after trope (forced proximity, “who did this to you?”, golden vs dark brother, enemies to begrudging allies, “i'm not like other girls because I want to bring my dagger to the ball”, morally gray love interest, “i hate that I don't hate you”) together with dual POV. The magic system was unique but not developed enough to buy me into it, and the plot holes made the character's actions feel random and insincere.
That being said, I never found myself struggling to reach for or finish this book, and the tension between Payden and whatshisface was really well written. The high stakes just weren't there for me since I have read other fantasy with much better world building and developed character motives. There were some scene for scene moments ripped off from acomaf and moments I rolled my eyes but this got me out of my DEEP reading slump which I will forever be grateful for. Will maybe read the next one, but only if I get it free on Libby ya feel? Ok bye
“We have the Hunger Games at home.”
This literally is not interesting until the final, like, 5%.
Too many settings in this book are “borrowed” from my favorite series The Hunger Game, but it is still entertaining. Hope the next book will be more original and I expect it to be full of angst.

That was a good ending. I loved it. Excited for the next book. There was lots of similarities to the Hunger Games and The Red Queen. There was a few cheesy YA parts.
Enemies to Lovers
Slow Burn
Zero spice
Lots of tension

I loved this
I hate myself for reading this now instead of waiting for the second to come out, I don't want to wait to find out the aftermath of those last pages
The tension between Kai and Pae is unmatched, it was making me anxious.
It's so adorable how he is so desperate for her and doesn't care in the slightest if he shows it. And he did. Repeatedly.
The world building wasn't that strong but I loved it anyway, it's not new but it's still different somehow.
I also don't want Kitt to be evil, I feel like it's building up to that but I hope it doesn't happen
Literraly to die for. I'm numb to all now. I will not recover. I need the next one in my blood right now (not before july 2024 ?!???????!). I'm dead, the end killed me. Lauren Roberts, you had no right writing something that good and finishing it like this. I don't think I'll recover. I love you. Please never stop writing, and inspiring man to do better, love better.
Edit: I seriously hope Kai begs Paedyn for forgiveness in the next book. Begs and begs and feels intense, bone crushing, heart blistering guilt for everything that happened to her. Both throughout her life and by the hand of his father. They also have to be endgame. I have high hopes for Lauren and Reckless!
I have either never felt pain like this before or it's another one of my nightmares.
I must admit that this book never held my attention at the start, I swear it took on and off reading for roughly an hour to scrape 29 pages. But, I do like to say that some of the best books have the slowest, most boring starts that can kill anyone if they focus too hard. This, combined with complete and utter confusion, can lead to wanting to give up but that was not something I could do. After reading the first ~100 pages of Dance of Thieves and my siblings graciously picking out Powerless for me I knew I had no chance of a DNF until I was well into the hundred or so pages of the book.
And turns out I was wrong. Again.
A boring start can trick the best of us and we are left very impolitely with a sad ending that makes you feel as though you've had you're heart ripped out. They say “a life for a life” and who knew that could be so true. A 14-15 year old Kai killed Paedyn's father, whether he was unsuspecting or not to who the guy was it most definitely happened. A present day Paedyn Gray thinks the king has killed her father only to be told by him, and realise for herself, that it was her precious Malakai. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a life. Paedyn kills the king. Payback. Heart-wrenching payback.
I don't know how to come back from this, especially with Kai going back to chase his official hunt as enforcer. But do not get me started on Kitt, I hate him with a passion.

the starting was good, the banter was great but then i kind of figured out what will happen and i just lost interest. plus for some weird reason i was anxious as fuck reading the ending.
i dont know if i will be reading the next book when ever it comes out
