I do sometimes enjoy the sweeping epics that are told over decades and I think the only historical fiction books I enjoy have to do with Asian culture, that being familiar to me, but this wasn't one of my favorites. I was happy to see Peony grow and mature, but I had a hard time connecting with her.
I was so disappointed in this book. I really wanted to like it because I've enjoyed other Lisa See books, but I just couldn't relate to anything in it. It was too romantic even for me. And if read about clouds and rain one more time I was going to lose my mind (if you've read it you know). And then I get to the end and find out it was based on actual events! Too unbelievable.
I found this book to be more compelling than Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I admired her historical research & attention to detail in both books, but I became much more involved in this story. Which is weird, because Snow Flower was primarily a story of female friendship and this was more of a love story (love at first sight, even, which I usually kind of hate), and normally I'd take a friendship story over a love story any day.
