This is like a boy and his dog type story but it's a fox and it kinda has a nice spin on it! Instead of it just being concentrated on the boy it switches between the boy and the fox each chapter. So one chapter would be about the boy and the next would be about the fox. Each character has its time to grow and develop and they really did a nice job on that. The boy learns to find his core and stand up for what he believes is right after many trials and the fox learns how to be wild and free after going through his own trials. This book is very good at bring things full circle which is kinda a strength and a weakness. They talk about how many things are considered one thing even though they could be completely different (I already forgot what it's called) and then bringing a theme full circle again really brings out that point they want to make...it also makes the plot very predictable. [Like when he throws the toy, once to trick him another time to set him free. That's the biggest one. And there seemed to be a theme with things loosing a leg? Like his leg was injured, runt lost his, and the old lady also lost hers...like idk if that was suppose to mean anything? Did I miss some symbolism? Let me know what you think. (hide spoiler)] This was a little slow, If I was reading it I probably would have been annoyed so I'm glad I got the audio book because the narration was very nicely done and I didn't notice too much.

I really am not a big fan of boy and his “dog” stories but this one is really excellent I thought. I thought it had some refreshing ideas and good character development.
