As some others have said, this is a little long for what it is but it's very readable and I flew through it in 24hrs. The mystery and the twists were good, I think I only guessed one of them so that's not bad.
I listened to this one on audio and whilst not my favourite it was still an easy enough listen.
Fi just got back from a short break, when she gets home, there is a couple taking ownership of her house. This book is told from the point of view of Bram and Fi, the two main characters. The narration is unique as it it told through a podcast and a word document.
There is a lot of layers to this story, there were a lot of subplots explored. But the thing is, it got really boring and repetitive in the middle. The book could have been more enjoyable if it was 100 pages shorter. Buddy reading this, made me want to finish it, if it wasn't a buddy read I might have DNFed this so shout out to the 2 ladies I read this with.
The ending though! I loved it and hated it at the same time! So much room for speculation, we know what will probably happen next but I want to read more, the extra 100 pages in the middle should have been added to the ending.
Not bad overall, but POint of View jumped around between husband and wife, past and present, which made things a bit confusing.
IT almost got a 4, if I wasn't so stingy with them. It got me to the other books by her, and the ending alone would be worth a star. Really great book if you're looking for family drama, a bit of a thriller, a bit of mystery, the whole guessing game that sometimes adulthood becomes. I was gonna say it would be perfect for an afternoon with lots of tea and wind, but let's face it, it's summer in Brazil. It was good even in this godforsaken heat and with us home since going out is sort of banned for the pandemics.
My partner asked me what it was about, and when I said real estate fraud he looked at me like I had two heads. But I was utterly gripped. Despite the fact that there are major crimes happening, this is a story where the tension is in the details, and the stakes feel massively personal. I also loved how self aware an examination it was of upper middle class ambition and social dynamics.
This was probably one of the best endings to a book that I've read in a long time!
The ending has a huge twist that nearly pushed this to 4 stars. I liked the multiple points of view. This to me is a modern epistolary novel and I love epistolary novels. So that was awesome.
I didn't love the characters. I didn't hate them either. I just didn't care a lot. There was a next to the to last twist at the end, but I didn't care about that one.
So lots of twists, but not as much character work.
