i did NOT know this book was by the maus creator but it was a childhood favorite–pop up book that had a fake “leash” and some textured pages, basc inviting you to interact with the physical book throughout the story. it was really popular when i bought it at the school book fair around first grade ~so cool~ to have the dog book and play with it. or smth. was i imagining the hype because i just wanted the book so badly?? or was this book actually a status symbol for about a hot second in elementary? hoping it's the latter. this book does live up tho.
the school library journal rates it for preschool-grade 1 reading level, but i think it might skew a bit older as well since it's just a fun book to play with. i can't justify buying myself another copy (i gave my copy away a few years ago while babysitting since the little girl seemed to enjoy it so much) so instead i will totally recommend this to anyone out there looking to gift a child with an innovative picture book.
