‘'I'm still trying to find the parts of meI left hidden between pages of a storyI never wanted to forget, But you were always in the last place I looked.''
This doesn't seem original to me...
Darkness. Night has the unique ability to make us discover thoughts we never knew we've nurtured all along. Loneliness, loss, love, change. These are themes that are common in Poetry. And Poetry is such a difficult form for anyone to judge. I almost feel as if I am actually shuttering, even violating the very soul of the artist. For how can anyone know what a poet had in mind in those moments of conception of their creations?
Having said that, I found nothing extraordinary or unique or even attractive in this collection. There were a few poems that were beautiful, capturing the essence of an ethereal, melancholic nocturne but for the most part, the works included seemed written like an amalgamation of cliche expressions and Twitter ‘'adages''. And I hate both.
‘'Nocturnal'' is a word that evokes solemnity, tranquility, the night with its silent demons staring at us, reprimanding us, possibly tempting us. It calls for Chopin and Liszt. This collection wasn't able to make me feel anything but it may appeal to many readers. The potential was there, no doubt about it. It was the execution that didn't win my heart.
Many thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
