When several farms in the area contract foot-and-mouth disease and have to slaughter their herds, the Merrows at Castle Farm are determined to isolate the farm from all visitors so that the highly infectious disease is kept away. Tamzin, Rissa and their friends were due to visit the farm for a holiday, and find an ingenious way to prove they have not been infected. When Mr Merrow is involved in a serious accident, the children take over the management of the siege themselves.
