As usual with a Stephen King novel it's about 400 pages too long. Seriously if you cut this down to 300 pages or less I think this story would be better. King was a must read for me and the books I've read after Pet Sematary up to this one of his career have been so boring and slow. The story is good and ominous with a cool villain but just too much filler for me
A nearly perfect read until the last 10-15 pages. Not a great ending but certainly not bad enough to drop any stars. This just jumped right into my top three King novels.

As an audiobook it was very entertaining. I can imagine it to be a bit slow at times had I read it myself. The ending was very King-esque: kinda random and anticlimactic.
I felt like the story lost a lot of weight due to the fact that people were basically in a trance when doing the pranks for Gaunt. It wasn't really about how far people would go to fulfil their hearts' desire. Though the ending felt like exactly that was what King intended the story to be. And it just wasn't.
So instead of a deep story criticising consumerism or whatever – which it could've been – it was just a pulpy, entertaning novel. That's fine, I like that, but let's drop the pretence, I'd say. ^^

One of Kings better novels. Gaunt is probably one of my favorite Stephen King villains.
I buddy read this with a couple of ladies from Instagram. I went into this book completely blind which is what I do with all of King's books now. I didn't have any expectations and I didn't know what to expect.
This was one of those books where you have to read to the end to know how you really feel about it. When I started it, I was intrigued, and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happens and what the point was. Unfortunately, after finishing it I was still left with so many unanswered questions and what was revealed to us just wasn't satisfying enough for me.
The buildup was great. King is a great storyteller but, in my opinion, he struggles with ending his books. If the reasoning was different, I might have enjoyed this one more. I seem to have an unpopular opinion on this book so don't take my word for it. If this sounds like something you would enjoy I definitely think you should read it because like I said everything but the end was good for me.
“Needful Things”, que no Brasil recebeu o título “Trocas Macabras”, é um livro excepcional, que demonstra mais uma vez o talento de Stephen King em contar histórias. A infinidade de personagens apresentados e a forma como as histórias, dramas e conflitos de cada um deles se entrelaça aos poucos e vai culminando num clima de horror crescente é sensacional.
Eu já havia lido em algum lugar que a história de “Trocas Macabras” — que gira em torno da chegada de uma nova e misteriosa loja chamada “Artigos Indispensáveis” à cidade de Castle Rock, Maine e da forma como os habitantes da cidade vão se envolvendo com seu misterioso proprietário de uma forma em que suas vidas mudam completamente e definitivamente — era uma das obras primas de Stephen King. E após ter lido as quase 1000 páginas deste excelente ebook publicado pela Suma em apenas 10 dias, posso afirmar que realmente é uma obra prima. Publicada em outubro de 1991, mostra porque o autor é indiscutivelmente o mestre do terror e do suspense.
Cinco estrelas fácil. Recomendo.
Reconciliación con el tito King. Tenía este tochaco esperándome en mis estanterías desde hace años y para variar decidí escogí esta lectura por un mero impulso.
Como de costumbre, King se lo toma con calma para presentarte el pueblo, los personajes y la situación. Quién coja un un libro de King extenso no puede esperar otra cosa.
Aunque en mi opinión le sobran un par de cientos de páginas, pero todo lo hace para que la evolución de la semillas que planta al principio, te resulte natural.
Todo el que haya tenido una educación mínimamente religiosa sabe a los 3 segundos cual es la verdadera identidad del villano, pero aún así no te lastra la narración, el libro no va de eso. Más bien al contrario, te encanta ver como juega con la naturaleza humana y como es relativamente fácil provocar una chispa entre dos personas para que haya una explosión.
De hecho creo que no hacía tanta falta el elemento mágico para conseguir esta manipulación, sobra con conocer la mezquindad del corazón humano. Y el señor Gaunt la conoce de sobra...
Cuando todo el caos se empieza a desarrollar y alcanza su pico no podía dejar de leer, me tenía completamente enganchada.
Alan Pangborn destaca como protagonista en esta novela coral y ha sido muy bonito reencontrarse con este personaje después de ver la serie de Castle Rock (muy recomendable para los fans de King, yo sigo pensando en ella después de meses). La serie ha ganado incluso más, viendo lo bien que ha adaptado al personaje y los guiños que le hace a la novela.
Para variar con el autor, lo más flojo es el final de la novela, demasiado rápido, sacado de la manga y fácil.
Termino esta reseña inconexa ya, y recordad, nadie vende duros a cuatro pesetas, desconfiad de cualquiera que os ofrezca la ganga del siglo, sobre todo del misterioso vendedor que acaba de llegar a tu precioso y tranquilo pueblo dónde nunca pasa nada.
Stephen King is hit or miss for me. Unfortunately this one falls into the later. While I enjoyed this book at first, after a while it just grew so repetitive. Go to the shop, buy something then owe a favor.....one hundred pages later go to the shop, buy something then owe a favor....one hundred pages later.....you get the drift. A serious round of editing could have chopped out unecesary bits and brought the action much quicker. I think the whole bit with the church groups could have been left out entirely. And I must confess by the 400s I was skipping forward to Alan's parts or Patricia's. I didnt really care about any other character and there were certainly enough to read about. I also couldn't comprehend the events towards the end. How did certain characters suddenly attain power? And what was the point of introducing poison? It did not add to the story line. Bottom line is, this book felt like it was full of filler and not enough decent story.
Read this when it first came out and find it just as thrilling now as I did then.
King knows his psychotics well, and this book has plenty of them. This is smalltown rivalry and grudge-bearing brought to a whole new level, with the aid of puppet-master Leland Gaunt, proprieter of Needful Things.
I think the moral of the story may very well be “Be careful what you wish for”.
Questo è stato il primo libro che ho letto del Re, per inciso consigliato da una collega che di King aveva letto solo questo volume, dunque decisamente non una fan. Tanto per farvi capire quanto mi sia piaciuta questa storia, posso dirvi che ho acquistato tutti i libri dell'autore dopo di questo.
È l'ultimo romanzo ambientato a Castle Rock, quarto di un quadrilogia che comprende: “Cose preziose”, “Cujo”, “La metà oscura” e “La zona morta”, più alcuni altri racconti. In effetti, questo è l'atto conclusivo degno di tutti gli altri romanzi ambientati in questa ipotetica città del Maine.
La trama è avvincente, lo stile è il solito di King che colpisce al cuore il lettore, i personaggi sono delineati con la solita bravura, devo ammettere che è quasi impossibile riuscire a staccarsi da questo libro. King come sempre è geniale nel gestire un così gran numero di personaggi, ma d'altronde questo è sicuramente uno dei suoi punti di forza.
A Castle Rock apre un nuovo negozio dal misterioso nome di “Cose Preziose”. E l'inquietante e diabolico proprietario, Leland Gaunt, sembra avere un oggetto giusto per tutti ed il prezzo è molto vantaggioso, esattamente ciò che ognuno può permettersi con l'aggiunta in un innocente scherzo all'indirizzo di un conoscente. E' proprio questo che sta alla base del libro che mi ha catturato così tanto... cosa siamo disposti a cedere per ottenere quello che più desideriamo? Cosa siamo disposti a fare per ottenerlo? E il malvagio chi è? Chi ci propone “l'affare” o noi che siamo così ben disposti ad accettare? La realizzazione dei desideri è un'illusione che svanisce nel momento in cui si concretizza.
Il finale, come sempre non è un punto forte dello scrittore infatti non è la prima volta che lascia a desiderare, ma si lascia perdonare dalla mole del libro che sviscera gli animi umani in profondità, facendoci tutti riflettere sulle loro azioni e così ci fa interrogare sui nostri stessi comportamenti.
Dunque, voi cosa sareste disposti a fare per una “Cosa Preziosa”?
