This is a sequel that didn't need to exist in any way. I had low expectations, and it didn't even meet those! Kepnes made Joe such a comedic villain in my eyes. The body count is absurd. Absurd is actually a good word for the whole book. I don't know how Joe expected to make it big time while still maintaining anonymity either... Like I said, absurd.
First Thing i wanna say is , i was willing to give this book two stars , but ‘Without any spoiler' the ending cost the book one star .
i have read YOU a couple of months ago and i fell in love with it , it was a five out of five stars book , it was everything i wanted in a book , the creepiness , the stalking , the killing , the JOE !! ,and everything , so when Hidden Bodies came out i was so excited to read it , because i wanted more of what i liked in the first book , and unfortunately , i was really really disappointed .
This book was absolutely plot-less book (if that's even a word !) , it kept me wondering the whole book ‘So where is this book going ?? what am i waiting for ?? why i'm i even reading this after the first 100 pages which were a complete mess ? ‘ and the answer was simple . I Needed to see the HIDDEN BODIES .
Now to the Spoilery Part !
first of all , WHEN I REACHED THE ENDING I WAS LIKE : like seriously !! it's like the author couldn't decide what to do with Joe , she wanted to save him , but she couldn't say that 'They let him go' because any reasonable human will think that it's unrealistic , like come one he killed people and from what i see , it's obvious that they can't let Joe go just like that , even if they did , they could have discovered some new evidence any time in the future and arrested him again ! the ending people ! the ending is just too 'safe'.second thing , could you tell me what kind of a woman would decide to stay with a KILLER just because she has his baby ! any sane woman would have gone to the police or just run or something , specially a woman like Love , she's been in two relationships before , she's not stupid or naive to just give everything up and stay with Joe after he admitted to her that he killed people including his ex girlfriend ! i mean come on .
overall , i think this book was a big mess , a big failure , 448 pages of nothing .
i hated it , and i'm gonna forget that has a equal named hidden bodies.yes YOU is my favorite stand alone ever.
Goodbye Joe Goldberg .
Just like with the book You this was a reread for me. My thoughts are similar to the first time around but I will say I hated Love's family even more after reading the book a second time around.
this is a three-star rating for me. I loved YOU I ate it up and wanted more and this one just left me feeling blah. I miss crazy Joe! I miss the “I'm-going-to-misinterpret-everything-the-girl-I-am-obsessed-with-does-and-turn-it-into-how-she-is-in-love-with-me” Joe. Trust me, Joe is still insane, but it is different. It isn't the kind of crazy that I found so endearing in the last book. I am let down. The good news is that book three has brought back crazy Joe in waves He is calm and crazy in a great combination. I will be posting that review either tonight or tomorrow.
Now, had I gone into this book not knowing how entertaining, funny, witty, and completely bonkers Joe was in You, then I probably would have enjoyed this book more because it really was good. BUT... knowing that the best parts of the last book were missing in this book lead me to disappointment. Again, not because the story was not good, not because I did not enjoy the book, but because I missed the brand of crazy that Joe embodied in You. I am so glad that this series continued these types of books are enjoyable for me. I wonder what that says about me as a person.
3.5 Stars
YOU was one of my absolute favorite books so far this year, probably all of last year also. So you can imagine my delight when I found out that there is a sequel. More Joe, who wouldn't be excited...
Unfortunately, this one didn't quite rise to the greatness of the first book. The badass, twisted Joe of YOU was missing for most of the book here. Oh, he would pop in now and then, and that's what kept me reading along, but for the most part what we get in this book is a watered down version. A lot of the time he came across as weak, and easily pushed around. The secondary characters in this one were also boring. I loathed LOVE, she was incredibly uninteresting, and I didn't believe for a second Joe would be that enamored by her. FORTY (who spoke like Leo Dicaprio in The Great Gatsby) was to much of a caricature with his constant use of “Old Sport”
I was also disappointed that the whole Amy situation was just pushed to the side. This felt way out of character for the Joe we got in the first book. Also, the name dropping and product mentions in this one was WAY OTT. It really took away some of my enjoyment in reading this because it became ridiculous with almost every other page having a celeb name drop or a product mention. In anycase, I did finish it, and I really want to read how Joe is going to get himself out of his current situation. So even though this wasn't as phenomenal as YOU I still think it is worth a read.
A legitimate antihero who makes no attempts to make the reader like him, but succeeds anyways. Review to come..
