I actually laughed out loud. I was not expecting that based on the cover and blurb.
I randomly found this book while browsing Goodreads and I am so glad I did. BUT, I am now so frustrated because my library doesn't carry the rest of the series!!!
Now, don't go into this book expecting fine literature. This book is hilarious and fun. About 100 pages in I decided it felt like really great fan-fiction. Why? Because there are some ridiculous things that go down, yet people just giggle and let it go (A woman climbing on a table in order to stare down her mate and then getting into a makeout session) or moments which could have been cut but were kept for humor (the grenade.... really? If this was IRL that woman would never be allowed near a weapon again). There was also a lot of ‘let's leave the room and let them talk– talk takes two minutes and then rejoin the group'. The immaturity and naivety was hilarious, but also shocking... as well as changing in personality (Mad woman without coffee one morning and then never again??)
To summarize the above: It is corny, silly, and pushes what we are willing to believe.
But, damn I loved this. I will probably always smile when I think of the tampon adventure. Also, for all the Alphas and mega men, they were normal ass guys!! Possessive? Yeah, but they blushed, they laughed, were dorks, and even bent to their ladies will. I love these men. And the women? ...well, we didn't get too many and I wouldn't put them to any tests (although Meryn isn't used to having friends, soooooo), but I liked the personalities. Meryn, while immature at times, is amazing. She is a geek, a nerd, and a computer hacker – hell yeah. Give me more mature ladies like Meryn PLEASE!! I don't feel like she and Aiden are the best match – interest-wise, but I feel like they will grow together and learn from one another.
Fantasy was pretty slim, there isn't a lot of magic or shifting going on, but it didn't feel needed.
I honestly, devoured this book and I'm DYING for the next one, but I've spent too much money on books lately I don't know if I can justify buying more :( but this will be a difficult battle of wills!
Oh by golly this is definitely one of my most favorite books of all time. My only complaint was that the book wasn't longer.
The story was pretty fast-paced. I'm glad Alanea Alder didn't waste too much time over the introductions into a paranormal world for a human. That's not the only thing I can thank Alder for, either. She gave us a spunky and funny heroine who knows how to get the job done. She gave us this wonderful Alpha male who can be the most adorable teddy bear when the need arises. We have many friends who give the main character support. There's also the stuck up snobs whom the main character puts into place. And then we can't forget the stimulating problem which is an invisible being coming after Meryn.
I absolutely have to gush more about Meryn. She's a geek with all her references (which I don't understand but everyone's reaction to her references still make them enjoyable and hilarious). She's also a tech whiz who can hack into basically anything. But the most important things about Meryn are her personality and attitude. Despite her being so anti-social, she has made plenty of true friends without any pretenses. She has also, as I wrote earlier, put many annoying and infuriating pieces of scum in their place. She doesn't take any shit, which allows her to be able to do so many incredible feats.
My only complaint, as I also mentioned earlier, is that the book was too short. I feel like a lot of questions were left unanswered, though I suppose they'll be answered in the other books. I also wish this book wasn't so short since I wanted some scenes of Meryn exposing some geekiness to others, especially Aiden and Bryon.
In short, I WANT MORE AIDEN AND MERYN. DON'T MAKE ME BECOME SEPARATED FROM THEM. I LOVE THEM TOO MUCH.
3.5 stars!
This was a pretty decent read. I liked the characters for the most part. Meryn was super funny, and kick ass most of the time. Alas a few times she crossed over to become whiny and annoying. I sometimes wanted to tell here to suck it the hell up! lol
I enjoyed the world building, but thought the character descriptions could have been a little more in depth. I could never really get a good picture of what some of them looked like. The side characters were interesting, and the plot flowed nicely.
Overall I enjoyed this one!
