this was very cute and i thought it would be too cringe-y but it had exactly the right amount of it
2.5. Held my attention and was entertaining, but just didn't quite all add up and is pretty surface level/trope-y. The writing style was fairly jarring at times- just lacked flow and had too much obvious reveal in the sentences.
Meet Cute is a pretty fun read. My one rather large complaint, however, is that the male lead, Dax, did not feel realistic to me. Dax is a former actor, the child star of a TV series that the female lead of the novel, Kailyn, is seemingly obsessed with. Not ONCE did Dax seem like he was annoyed with Kailyn's obsession (and I mean OBSESSION.) over the show. She's constantly wearing merch from the show, or mentioning specific scenes offhand, or looking for more merch while out shopping. Wouldn't that be annoying? I dunno, maybe I'm reading it too seriously, but that bothered me. Everything else – the plot, the emotions shown within it – all that was enjoyable.
Though I will say the whole ‘enemies-to-lovers' thing did not last very long. They start getting along not too far into the book. Which is fine!! But it's made a big deal of in a lot of other reviews, so just be aware of that before you go in.
Overall, I'd say around 3 stars. Fun, but not perfect.
Kailyn and Dax had a very cute Meet Cute! Kaylin is definitely Dax's #1 Fangirl and has the memorabilia to prove it. I loved the fiery interplay between them early on and the conflicts and intrigue of trying to keep it platonic in front of Emme. I also loved how Emme was so essential to the story. I hope she eventually gets her own story. Loved the ending!
I really meant to review this 2019 title in a timely manner, yet here we are a month later...
I will say, that for an author I wasn't sure if I would read again, I really enjoyed this one. It is also a second-chance (kind of) romance which I usually don't like, but it worked for me. I'm so glad I picked it up.
This is a cute read that had me hooked. That being said it is pretty trope-y. Also, the more I actually think about this title, the more problems I have with it. Yes, I remember really enjoying it, but thinking about it in order to review it I keep going “Oh, yeah that happened” and “Was that an actual scene I was okay with?”
So I'm going to stop myself here – after I've knocked this down from 4.5 stars to 3. It has problems, but if you don't think deeply on it, just read it for the cute moments, then it isn't so bad. I will definitely give this author another chance.
