Life is a voyage so often documented within the pages. Mask Shavings is a small collection of poems revolving around loss, mental illness, adolescence, and the fearless will to evolve and love. It is divided into sections for personal happenings, ideas, and observations.

Melissa does an amazing job at bringing the reader into the scene with her writing. It hits it's mark right where it counts. I felt my heart strings being pulled multiple times during my 3 read-throughs of this book. I'm not super keen on heavier subjects when I read, but with this book it didn't matter, I quickly got over the discontent I usually have when reading or watching anything. My stance is usually “I want to read to escape the darkness and issues of the real world”, but this collection of poetry sucked me in fully to the point that I couldn't put it down. As a poet myself (With a unique style) Mask Shavings many tales, I found to be very well constructed, flowing, vibrant, cohesive and clear. This is a must read for poetry lovers & even those who typically find it hard to read poetry. Five out of five from me. I greatly look forward to her future works.
