The only other Reacher book I've read is Persuader, so maybe that fast pace spoiled me. Also, I listened to the audiobook of this and Dick Hill's businesslike narration felt more suited to a political thriller, like something by Tom Clancy.
The pace was agonizingly slow until the very end. Internet sleuthing features heavily, replete with long, laborious explanations of how the internet works. Much of the text felt like Child was filling space to hit a particular word count. The ending was lots of fun, but it didn't make up for the tedious slog that led up to it.
Goodreads needs half star reviews. This is a solid 70. Not his best, but definitely not a snooze.
Lee Child is one of my favorite authors and I've read everything he's written. Saying that, I'm only giving this book 3 stars. The reacher series is second only to the Mitch Rapp series but this particular book seems a bit contrived and formulaic based on his other books. Maybe I've read too many of his books and just have his style down. Highly recommend for anyone not overly familiar with his writing style though.
I come to the end of the Jack reacher novels after binge-reading all of them back-to-back. So, its quite difficult to critique any of them individually, but for the entire series I am very happy to have spend the amount of time I have with these twenty books so far. I'm eagerly awaiting the new one coming out in a few days !
I've only read 9 Reacher books (including this one) but Make Me has to be in my top 3 favorite. Very enjoyable.
Lee Child has a winning formula with Jack Reacher. I guess these are one of my guilty pleasures, and it was inevitable that I would read #20. It was OK; I think that the formula is now getting rather tired. About time for few changes. Maybe an ongoing relationship with Chang? I also gather that Child is planning books about Reacher's early military career - they might be fun.

“We should get a cup of coffee.”
Chang said, “I don't understand how you drink so much coffee.”
“Law of gravity,” Reacher said. “If you tip it up, it comes right out. You can't help but drink it.”
“Your heart must be thumping all the time.”
“Better than the alternative.”

While this series is entertaining to a point the suspension of disbelief is extremely high. Fun, simple story, plenty of irrelevancies, and holes in the plot but worth a read if you have a few hours to waste on a candy book.
Not read one for a while. Airport. Picked it up. Just like another cup of coffee. Then read it. Turned the pages and looked at them. Not my favourite, not my least favourite. But somewhere in between. Mid-range Reacher. But mid-range Reacher is still better than another high end book of the month. Solid. Reliable. Comfortingly familiar. Reacher never gets less than three stars.
Any Reacher is good Reacher, but it feels like Lee Child is getting a little tired of Reacher. Would like to see Reacher use more ingenuity.
