With the seven short stories in this book, Murakami takes us once again to the edge of the world. He draws us into the spell of demons dancing to the rhythm of jazz and death; leads us through the icy lands of the Antarctic inhabited by ice people; lets us confront giant waves crashing against the shores of a remote, sparsely populated province; brings us face to face with a green demon that startles and frightens; guides us into the silence of myth woven into human lives; and introduces us to the experience of loss in an empty, vast, and hollow room.

And in the end, it is Murakami himself who tells us that the way out of the labyrinth of emptiness and cold may come at the cost of death and eternal separation.
