Er... The pictures are very beautiful, and the story... well... er... Let's say it's too Christian to me, but if you are very Christian, you probably love it.
I'm reading a 2012 advanced copy of a revitalized picture book. The story from Lori Walburg is apparently copyright to a previous 1997, while these illustrations by Richard Cowdrey are fresh for 2012.
I vaguely recall from my youth Sunday School about the Jesus story in the candy cane. It was always something that when teachers handed out canes they had the message attached. I had never read a full story with it in depth and I think it's magical. It is wonderful to be able to share such a tale with my children. The last page has a “history of..” statement that adds in a bit of history that is a wonderful lesson for readers of all ages. We love Richard Cowdrey and it's no surprise that his illustrations are fun and whimsical. The glittery cover is fun as well, I definitely would have picked it up off a shelf before knowing what it was because it's so appealing.
Thanks to Zondervan for providing an ARC for review. I will definitely be wanting a real copy for us in the future.
