These books are excellent for my commute to work, and for my walks. I'm audiobooking them, they are read by Mary Robinette Kowal who is one of my favourite writers and a fantastic narrator.
So I leapt directly into this one after finishing three, which felt like a game changer... turns out that it was, but that this one made those changed games feel like appetizers for an epic game-changing main course, which is THIS one. The things Toby did in the prior books lead directly to this one, and the stakes were never higher or more personal. One really feels like McGuire has been playing a long game and it's paying off. And even after finishing this one I feel like there is so much more ahead. I cannot wait to get there.
October's friend Lily is really sick. Undines don't get sick. Toby must try to figure out what is wrong with her before it's too late. Also, rumor has it that Oleander is back. Coincidence? Probably not. And, Toby has been summoned by the Queen. This book was soooo good! I think this series just keeps getting better.
After a bumpy start, at some point, I really got into these books. I accept October for who she is ... a bad detective with a big heart, and an inability to see the sexy cat man wants her.
Late Eclipses started Toby down a new path in terms of learning about her identity, and she has some new roads open to her, and I want to see what happens.
I really liked this book. The pattern of the story felt more like the first book in the series, Rosemary & Rue. Toby was much more likeable in this book than the first. It was also nice to get SOME answers to a few of the questions floating around in the series. That led of course to more questions, but it was still very satisfying.
