It's fun!

My first new WoT book in 16 years and it did a good job overall with a few notable strange character decisions just made to keep the book steaming along. But that's alright, this is epic fantasy and it was suitably epic.

Thanks for the great imagination Rob, now let's see what Brandon does with this!

After a 3-4 consecutive book slump the plot starts moving forward, albeit slowly. Jordan seems to develop everything apart from the main character, who gets a few chapters in a 700 page book.

Time to move on to the supposed modern GOAT of fantasy writing in Brandon Sanderson who finished off the last 3 books after Jordan passed away 🫡

Knowing that Sanderson wrapped up the series is the only reason I didn’t give up on this series during the slog.

There seemed to be more jumping between perspectives then in previous books and combined with all the Seanchan names and perspectives made it somewhat hard to follow. Though that also be due to me taking a long time to finish this one.

Though they overall plot progression was interesting and a lot of fun to follow with a good amount of battles thrown in there.

Well, this one was finally a really good book. It had some lulls in the middle, but it had very engaging chapters all the way to the end. The last of Robert Jordan. Bring on the Sanderlanche!

Feels like it is all starting to come together I am enjoying this series though feels like it could have been done in half the number of books.

Amazing, absolutely the best series ever, and I still have three books left. XD This particular book was the last in the series written solely by Jordan. The remaining three were finished by Brandon Sanderson. I hope the change is seamless. I honestly can't imagine finishing someone else's work, but especially on as huge a scope as WOT. I don't know how Jordan kept everything straight, and he's the one that thought it up in the first place! I'm excited/nervous to see how Sanderson's continuation compares.

Compared to the previous couple books, the plot really lurched forward! It felt more like the earlier books in the series, with much better pacing throughout. I enjoyed Egwene's storyline, and Mat's storyline finally more interesting. I was glad that Elayne's rescue was over quickly, and didn't stretch over three books like Faile's...

Honey in the Tea, by itself, is easily 5 stars. It's one of my favorites in the entire Wheel of Time. I put it amidst up there up with The Road to the Spear.

The Golden Crane has one of the best single moments in the series. Also 5 stars.

The Mat stuff is 4. The Rand stuff is pretty good. So is most of the rest of it, with two unfortunate exceptions: the Perrin and Faile stuff REALLY drags the book down for me, so do the Elayne chapters.

So I guess that if I had to use one word to describe this book it would be “uneven”.

Without Honey in the Tea and The Golden Crane, I'd give it a 3. But those two are so good that I'll give it a 4.

Better than Crossroads of Twilight but still not as great as some of the previous books. At least exciting things happened!

Still slow

It's good, but it's a long series. Almost done.

Ho-hum, dacht ik, daar we weer. Veel te veel omschrijving, een plot zo snel als een hommel die in een pot honing zwemt...

Ergens na een hoofdstuk of twee dacht ik plots dat ik een andere auteur aan het lezen was. Ik heb het voor de zekerheid nagekeken on-line, maar nee hoor: dit elfde deel zou wel degelijk door Robert Jordan zelf geschreven zijn. En toch kan ik het niet geloven: pakweg een vijfde of een kwart van het boek is nog altijd vintage Jordan, maar de rest van dit boek is gewoon beter geschreven.

Omschrijvingen die niet clichématig zijn, woorden die nog nooit gebruikt waren, dat soort dingen.

En een verhaal dat zowaar vooruit gaat: de al drie boeken aanslepende problemen met Perrin/Faile, Tuon/Mat en Elayne worden opgelost, er zijn stappen in de Egwene / White Tower historie, en er is zelfs een groot gevecht met Rand en Forsaken en alles.

Het verhaal gaat soms zelfs té snel vooruit: voor een situatie die al drie boeken aansleept, is de Perrin/Faile-historie behoorlijk anticlimactisch opgelost, en het Forsaken-gevecht met Rand is over voor de lezer goed en wel beseft dat het begonnen is (het is een val, Rand! ik weet het. niet naartoe gaan, Rand! oh, ik ga toch gaan. blam, ‘t is een val. oei, mijn hand is af. oh, ik ben gewonnen. allez ju). En voor al wat er gesproken wordt over machinaties rond Elayne, gaat het daar ook veel te snel: ontvoering out of the blue, een paar bladzijden later bevrijding, kort gevecht, “okay, ik ondersteun u” “en ik ook” “ah ik ook”, hopla, een probleem dat al vier of vijf boeken aansleept: opgelost.

En dan is er nog Aram, een Tinker (totaal geweldloos volk) van geboorte die een volleerde vechter geworden was. We weten al een tijd dat de Aiel (totaal Ninja-achtig Fremen-achtig volk) een afsplitsing zijn van de Tinkers, dus men had kunnen vermoeden dat Aram een soort bruggenbouwer zou kunnen geweest zijn, met een verzoening eventueel tussen... ah neen, sorry, pets, Aram is out of the picture. En de Shaido Aiel, die een soort niet-eerbare afsplitsing van de Shaido zijn, en die al sinds boek één of twee een luis in de pels van iedereen zijn? “Zeg, we zijn terug naar waar we vandaag kwamen.” “Ah ok goed.” Wég!

Maar bon, dat zijn maar details. Ik vond dit geen verkeerd boek.

Voor wie de reeks zou willen lezen: ik dénk dat het zonder enig probleem doenbaar moet zijn om Path of Daggers, Winter's Heart en (vooral) Crossroads of Twilight over te slaan en enkel de korte inhoud te lezen op het internet, en dan weer aan te sluiten bij dit elfde deel, en dan door te steken naar het einde.

Op naar het laatste rechte stuk!

Its fairly clear at the outset that Robert could really have continued this mega series for much longer. There are so many sub ploys to follow apart from the main thread. As usual its Mat who steal the show but the rest are a bit repetitive. The thing that stands out though is that Robert meticulously ticks all the prophecies and keeps us wheelers happy to have made the complete journey. Now its time to see of Brandon can maintain this from all the Notes that Robert left behind. Just for the fact that this was the last book he wrote I wish more had happened in it but I think we can ignore such a minor miss. Robert is dead. Long live Jordan

What's amazing about KoD is that this is the book that convinced me that Jordan actually did have the series plotted out and that he did actually know which characters were where and doing what. Finally getting some questions answered in this book convinced me that he wasn't insane, just very devious. Sometimes, the distinction gets lost.
