A paranormal series with a lesbian main character? Totally not expecting this.
I ended up really enjoying this book all thanks to the banter. Kate is snarky, sarcastic, and full of quips, ready to talkback to anyone. The dialogue is really the highlight of the book. When she has a good partner to talk with, like Julian or... the incubus (omg how could I forget his name), it really shines through. I spent most of this book laughing.
Kate is a refreshing heroine. She isn't perfect - far from it really, so she feels like a real person. Julian, the 800 year old female vampire Prince also was a breath of fresh air. I absolutely loved her! Julian is probably my favorite character from the book.
The thing is, as much as I want to continue piling my love onto this book, I had some problems with it. For starters, it could be boring. The dialogue kept me in the book, but things felt like they were dragging on. I didn't always understand why Kate was doing things and part of the problem is because the devastating lack of world-building. Are we in the current time? Have paranormal beings always been out? Just tell me more!!! There is so much going on and so many different types of creatures that sometimes I felt lost.
So, I ended up enjoying the book and will probably recommend it to others, but I won't be continuing the series.
