my friend read this last year and kept talking about it, so naturally I did, too!

it was disappointing.

loved the roman graffiti references (I made bread today) but did not love the cheesy romance and cheesier red panda jokes. why. why. why.

it made my head hurt in a good way between cringes :)

Super creative spin on time travel Loved and easy read. The book is for teens.

“Invictus” is a standalone novel written by Ryan Graudin. The novel follows, Farway Gaius McCarthy who was born outside of time, he is the son of a time-traveling Recorder from 2354 AD and a gladiator living in Rome in 95 AD, and his birth defies the laws of nature. Farway wants to explore history himself, but after failing his final time-traveling exam, he takes a position commanding an illegal ship, to steal valuables from the past and sell them on the black market. During a heist on the Titanic, Farway meets a mysterious girl who is armed with knowledge that will bring Farway's existence into question, she will lead Far and his team on a race through time to discover a frightening truth which is that History is not as steady as it seems.

I found this interesting, but not the best. I had gotten confused at parts of the story. I gave the novel a 3/5 Stars.

Farway and his team are enjoying their secret adventures until one day a strange girl appears during one of their heists and throws everything into turmoil. Where did she come from? What does she want? As the team works to uncover answers to these questions, they may discover more than they bargained for...

With its cast of quirky, lovable characters and fast-paced action, Invictus draws the reader in almost immediately. Focus on the female and male leads is nearly equal, which will appeal to all readers. The story tackles a question most people probably wonder about time travel - what would happen if someone from the future had a child with someone from the past? What about if a child were born during time travel? This exciting novel pulses with camaraderie, loyalty, adventure, and love until the very end.

Ryan Graudin is one of those authors that has decent ideas but her execution of those stories is so flawless. She is able to pull you into the story and the characters' lives. I went into Invictus expecting just another science fiction novel with time travel and characters learning about the consequences of changing time. However, Invictus is so much more than that. I do not want to go into specifics for fear of spoiling anyone. But keep in mind this book is so much more than a time travel book.

The characters in this book are completely flushed out and I loved learning about each one and seeing them work together on the Invictus crew with Far. These characters already had relationships with each other so this book was focused solely on the adventure which I really enjoyed (Think Six of Crows when it comes to great group dynamics). It was refreshing to see both friendships and romances already in place rather than forming during the book. I liked watching the relationship evolve and strengthen between the characters.

This book definitely focuses on the story and the adventure. Since we are following a group of time-traveling thieves, there is a heavy focus on their daring adventures and how they accomplish their missions without also corrupting time. This is an action-packed adventure that kept me guessing until the end when everything wraps up. That is another unique aspect of this book, we get a standalone science fiction book. I did not feel at all like this book dragged or was rushed to get everything tied up. Graudin did an excellent job finishing the story arc in a single book.
