In the Watchful City

I am a bit unsure about this. I liked the main story but could see where it was going to go from the very beginning. Not that that is a bad thing per se but it didn't help me keep reading this already very short novel. The side stories were all quite nice, especially the one with the mermaids was amazing and some were also a bit disappointing. Like any short story collection really.

The bits where Anima is telling a story bothered me slightly. The bit where ?? tells Vessel about ??r life was nice but the composition on paper didn't really add anything significant and then later the poem about the sunrise just felt very unnecessary. The contents as well as the composition on the page. And in both parts, the punctuation was all over the place. Now if this was at all relevant to the text itself it might be nice like in House of Leaves, but it really wasn't so I didn't quite get the point. Was still very much worth the read though. 

So many of the concepts were cool in theory, but I found this short story collection overall insufferable. The plot structure is very similar to The Empress of Salt and Fortune, in terms of telling an overarching story of international political intrigue through intimate details of seemingly insignificant objects. Unfortunately the reason the characters have for doing this is not well realized or interesting (a character we barely get to know makes a cop character Feel Bad about aer role in a repressive police state - incidentally the one character the author mentions deliberately designing as a Black character in the afterword is just a vessel for reforming a cop lol - with a bunch of didactic stories about individuals who feel like characters in a fable rather than real people who could have ever existed). There is one story told through letters and official documents that I thought was good but all the other ones had at least one huge glaring issue that annoyed me (eg. the foot binding story does that ‘everyone suffers this but me' thing I hate in historical narratives, and the absolutely unbelievable character decision that drives the plot in the mermaid story). This could have been so good, but to me it wasn't.

This book was so unique and beautiful. I loved Anima, Vessel, and the mini-stories woven in. The poetry parts were inspired and so evocative, and the world was gorgeous and vibrant.

i don't know that i can really tell you what this book is about because i'm still wrapping my head around the core of the story and the cyberpunk setting, but i thoroughly enjoyed myself throughout this novella! similar to my fav EOUAD, there are short stories embedded throughout the main story that i lost myself in, as well as poetry/prose that was really moving

please look up TWs before picking this up!!!

The comparisons to Palimpsest are apt. Lovely framing for a short story collection, i wanted it to be twice as long.

I've only read one short story by the author before but I was so profoundly moved by it, that I had to add this novella to my tbr as soon as I got to know about it. And was doubly excited when I got the arc.

I will be honest and say it took me a few pages to get into this story and it was pretty slow going until then. Biocyberpunk is not a genre I would willingly pick up if not for being excited about the author's work, and it's also my shortcoming for not being aware enough about neopronouns that extensive usage of them in this story hindered my reading a bit at the beginning. But the author employs a story with the story kind of narrative device in this book, and by the time I was done with the first narrated “story”, I was totally hooked. Rooted in Asian history and culture, the author deeply explores themes of grief and oppression and trauma, and how they affect us, sometimes even without us knowing that we are experiencing the effects. Another thing that really connected to me was the subtle discussion about borders and immigration, and how this has a disparate impact on one's core identity as well as relationship with family.

Amina is a fascinating character. Æ became an extrasensory human to watch over the city of Ora because ær circumstances didn't leave Amina many choices. But new traumatic experiences has ær questioning if æ are truly protecting the citizens and if ær choices are correct. Meeting the enigmatic Vessel and ser cabinet of curiosities also opens up a whole new world of stories and possibilities to Amina, finally letting ær feel comfortable enough to make life altering decisions for ærself. We also meet many amazing characters within the narrated stories, who give us glimpses into understanding what having agency and being able to make choices means, and questioning us if we have the strength to face the consequences.

Overall, this was a very unique, one of a kind book which even if confusing at times, is something to be experienced. This queernormative Asian inspired futuristic world and it's deeply moving characters have left an impression on me and I would definitely want everyone to dive into it as well. Just remember that this novella is more on the profound and thought provoking side, and not a fast paced sci-fi adventure.
