The mystery result isn't shocking, but the feeling the chatacters give is shocking. The rich woman doing what she has to in order to hang on to money and wealth isn't new. The rich family with creepy secrets is also not new. But to feel a measure of sympathy for them along side the revulsion is new. The setting of the 1920's wad eye opening in terms of medical care for pregnancy and mental illness.
So the mystery isn't a surprise, but there is a lot to enjoy along the way.
