Autobiografie van de schrijver van Carter beats the devil. Dat was indertijd een heel fijn boek om te lezen en de blurb van deze biografie beloofde een wederom een hoop (“Extraordinary . . . Riveting . . . An audacious, boundary-shattering work”, etc)
Dat ging voor het eerste deel zeker op – zijn vroege jeugd was, als we de schrijver mogen geloven, nogal bijzonder... – zijn moeder zit nogal ingewikkeld in elkaar (Al is een vroeg citaat al dat zijn moeder alles ontkent van wat er in het boek is geschreven; het is ook een “memoir” en niet een “auto-biography” :-)
“Ann made butterscotch brownies, and then made them again, because we ate through the first batch in the place of conversation”
Hoe ouder hij wordt, hoe meer het gaat over zijn (moeizame) relaties met vrouwen, en hoe meer het begint te lijken op zwelgen in hoe goed hij toch is als schrijver, maar dat de doorbraak maar niet wil komen (met een paar sneren naar o.a David Leavitt)
Dat ging me op een gegeven moment zodanig tegenstaan dat het aantal sterren inmiddels was gedaald naar twee, en ik de schrijver eigenlijk gewoon een eikel vond.
“‘The thing is,' she said slowly, ‘when you talk about your writing, you're starting to sound like your mom talking about her business opportuntiies'”.
Maar dan blijkt hij het tegen het eind van het boek toch allemaal zodanig aan elkaar te knopen dat de meeste irritaties van daarvoor weer verdwijnen. Of het nou uiteindelijk een aardige man is, blijft een beetje in het midden :-)
