This book is fairly absurdist and honestly, that's what I liked about it most. But I do think it could've done with some more polishing. While Kitty's character was pretty fleshed out, all other characters in the book were fairly one dimensional. The dialogue suffered a bit because of that. The ending felt kind of rushed and the identity of The Creep was kinda easy to figure out even before the halfway mark.
But! I enjoyed the feminine rage (as far as that can be enjoyable) and in the end this was a fun quick read that I didn't feel I had to slog through at all. I think a lot of women have had the urge to do what Kitty did throughout the book, especially after reading so so so many #metoo stories that haven't stopped bombarding us since we started speaking up.
Tldr: flawed, but nicely indulging revenge fantasy comes to pass in a quick witted story about feminine rage.
3.5* but rounding it up
3.5 ⭐️ actually
I support women's rights, but more importantly, I support women's wrongs.
see, I am a simple true crime girly - when I saw a female serial killer story plot, I loved it. its such a male-dominated field, we really need to break the glass ceiling on this one.
the story started so strong, in fact, until the 60% mark, I wasn't worried about the plot. the writing does come off a little try-hard in some places but that's alright since it's a debut novel and kitty did have her own fun voice. her professional, class and background really played into her motivation and methods. 10/10 for that (spoiler alert from here)
BUT I got worried when I was reaching the final third, pages were running out and plots remained to be unveiled, consequences remained to be dealt it. kitty's killing was smooth sailing, any conflict on that front did not last for more than a couple of pages to resolution. the final reveal of stalker was deeply underwhelming and twisted her stance. While Katy Brent has written a fun bingeable book, kitty does suffer in terms of lacking a clear personality. she isn't committed enough to be blood thirsty murders and isn't exactly delulu to think she is a punisher/vigilanty killer. she yoyos but its not intentional and it gets confusing for the reader. the tone in the last few pages also felt very different? i see that she ended the book with a bit of a portal to book two, I hope she spends the second book finding out who kitty really is and gives some consistency in her tone and thought.
2,5-3/5
Siis ihan hauska ja nopea kirja.
Tykkäsin tosiaan kirjan perusideasta, mutta monesti turhat seksijutut meni ehkä (itsellä ainakin) vähän yli.
The title of this book caught my attention. I mean, I think most women can find a bitter amusement at first glance. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), I quickly lost amusement and felt like I'd crossed over a morally grey threshold.
I sympathize. Really I do. Self-defense, scorn, what have you. Initially, I could understand where Kitty was coming from. That didn't last long. She became one of the most unlikable and reckless protagonists I've ever encountered. To summarize as quickly as possible, Kitty is an influencer with a hit list and she's vegan (which we hear about repeatedly).
I understand the point the author was aiming for. Women often get a raw deal in life. I just don't think this is the way to get that message across. I thought I had a decent sense of dark humor but I guess not. The further into the book I read the more it unsettled me. My greatest takeaway was the realization that I'm not as desensitized to subjects like murder as I thought I'd become. Lastly, I don't know why this is categorized as a thriller. Crime, yes, but I wasn't the least bit on edge.
A huge thanks to Harper360 for sending me an ARC copy of the book to read and review.
thank you netgalley for the digital arc!
this was a fun and breezy read, definitely a good palate cleanser and i enjoyed reading it concurrently with my physical reads.
a lot happened and it was pretty fast-paced. i do think it could have done without the romance element, but it didn't necessarily hurt the overall story. it did feel like this book sometimes didn't entirely know what it wanted to be and the ending felt a bit abrupt to me. there's a lot that happens where you have to suspend your disbelief, so just be ready for that.
the plot in itself is quite a fun idea, i just wish the main character and her motives were more fleshed out.
to sum up; a fun read but it just personally lacked some structure for me!
