I'm 3 books into the TOG series and have been loving it. Everything about this series has started off strong and amazing...until now. Heir of Fire was entirely too long. So many words to say nothing or to be used as filler. I felt like I was re-reading ACOTAR for the first time.
I love where the story is going, I love the character development, but why for the love does SJM crank out several amazing books and then one curveball that could have been 40% shorter and still got you there.
A twisty, turny, suspenseful ride that will leave readers on the edge of their seats. Maas elevates her storytelling to new heights, blending fantasy, adventure, and emotional depth in a narrative that is both expansive and intensely personal.
Celaena's journey in this novel is a remarkable evolution from a mere assassin to a complex character grappling with her destiny. Her character development is profound as she faces internal and external battles, making her more relatable and compelling. The introduction of new characters, adds layers to the story, enriching the world Maas has created.
The narrative is masterfully woven with multiple storylines, each adding to the overarching plot while maintaining its unique allure. Maas's world-building is exceptional, with each location vividly described and contributing to the overall atmosphere of the story.
The suspense is skillfully crafted, with twists and turns that are both surprising and satisfying. Maas keeps readers guessing, expertly building tension and intrigue throughout the novel. The action sequences are exhilarating, written with a clarity and intensity that make them leap off the page.
One of the most impressive aspects of this book is its emotional depth. Maas delves into themes of loss, identity, and resilience, giving the story a richness that goes beyond typical fantasy fare. The emotional journeys of the characters are as compelling as the physical ones, making the reader deeply invested in their fates.
Great book! SJM knows how to write a good story. The POVs were all super interesting and I love the cast of characters and all of the things they go through. My heart hurts for all of them, especially Dorian. Excited to see how Manon's story develops.
The first half of this damn book took me over three months to get through. It just seemed to drag on so I kept putting it to the side and reading other books. But I finally committed and it ramped up. Loved the second half of the book.
My only gripe is Manon. I can't figure out how she will fit into the overall story yet. I found myself groaning when a new chapter was one of hers. It felt out of place in this book.
Though full of tropes and a healthy dose of one-dimensional thinking, I enjoyed this book so much. I'm fully hooked on this series now, especially with the introduction of new characters and more plot development and world-building. What a fun read, with great twists and stakes.

Another great entry in this surprisingly addictive series!
A few new characters were introduced and immediately became some of my favorite (Manon is simply fantastic)!
I love where the story went and how expanded the world became.
The ending just makes me want to pick up the next book of the series this very moment!
I have only one criticism and that is the way the resolution of the conflict between Celaena and Rowan was handled. The switch was so abrupt as though Rowan became a different person.
Regardless, I enjoyed this book so very much and am continuously impressed by the author.
The series is really starting to pick up now and easily one of my favourites. The character development was amazing AND the plot was actually developing too!
I love the bond that's developed between Celaena and Rowan
SJM can do no wrong. Not going to say this is my fave so far, but def starting to enjoy the multitude of character POVs.

I am buddy reading this series with Destiny this year and we are actually already about to be start book #6 I am just behind on writing my reviews and because of that it's hard to keep straight what happened in what book. I said in my review for for Crown of Midnight that I was finally being sucked into the story even if it was mostly because of the romance. I then read this one and I was sucked in even more by all of it. I think this was my favorite one up until this point.
Celaena has grown so much throughout each book but in this one we get to really see her come into her own which I loved. I was so waiting for the time to come for her not to be scared of herself pretty much. Then of course there the romance that I was on the fence about because while I could totally get their connection I couldn't let go of one particular thing which made it hard for me to be completely onboard with it but lets just say I eventually changed my mind on this.
I can't not mention Abraxos. That little Wyvern stole my heart. I love a little animal companion and while he's not a fluffy loving animal I still love him so much. I can't really talk about anything else because I really don't want to spoil anything so I will leave it at this. If you haven't started this series I highly suggest you do.
I feel like this book is the actual start of the series and the ones before it were all just prequels. Also, we all collectively hate the covers of these books right? Her hair is wrong and she doesn't even use a bow and arrow in this book, does she? I can see why this is the book that turns people off to the series as a whole. I really just did not care about Aedion and Chaol's plot, let alone Dorian and Sorscha. I mean we all knew that was going to end up in tragedy. I really liked Manon's story, though it's a lot to just throw in a brand new character to focus a third of the book on when you are halfway through a series. I was bored for a lot of this book, but the ending tied everything together and Rowan is a dreamboat. Beware of the tattooed fae males in a SJM series... As I'm writing this review, I'm already about 100 pages into Queen of Shadows.
This book made me so mad.
1. What is up with Rowan? - he's such a dull uninteresting character.
2. Celeana's character has dramatically changed. Whilst I'm not appears to characters growing or developing- it seems like SJM took an interesting assassin and wiped all the interesting bits out. How would Celeana be okay with Rowan picking her up and taking her to his room and her just bring in there from then on? She spends a couple of weeks on her mission before deciding it's impossible. She went through a portal, battled a demon, but a few guards and a fancy dude on a horse is too much!!!
3. Celeana blaming Chaol for the same things that she has done was infuriating. I hope this is a plot device because at one point I wanted to throw my book across the room I was that cross. I told myself over and over that Celeana is supposed to be 19 and this is why she is written this way.
4. Did they forget about the tower, the wyrd, wyrdkeys etc.
5. The numerous and repetitive training scenes - I got bored with them. This made the book slow and took out any pace that the previous books had.
6. Isn't she allowed any interaction with female characters that aren't dead (or soon to be), evil or a minor character. The majority of people she interacts with are male and are in some way smitten.
The chapters with the witches and wyverns were the most interesting.
1 ⭐️ Didn't like it all.
2 ⭐️ Wasn't worth the read, was boring or problematic to me.
3 ⭐️ Fair or good read. Fun but nothing profound. May have interesting characters, themes or plot items. May have flaws but I can overlook them.
4 ⭐️ Good or great read.
5 ⭐️ Perfect or as near to as possible.
It's been a while I've been waiting to read it. Like a lot of previous readings, a lot of people said to me it's one of the best of the book series. But for once, I expected too much. I mean, of course I liked it, but I didn't love it. I think it's because the book is more deep, better writing and a lot of POV. But still, I don't get the interest of Manon's POV. Like the first two books, the end is so breathtaking !! I mean, just with 30 last pages, the author manages to make us wanting for the next book !
Honestly don't really care about the Rowan romance. Giving this book four stars EXCLUSIVELY for Manon and Abraxos. A little bit of star credit goes to cinnamon roll Dorian.
I really cannot praise this series enough! It is truly great. It has fantasy, mystery, romance, enemy to lovers, and epic last stand battles! There is nothing that this series leaves untouched. And as someone who dislikes romance, this has light enough romance that even I enjoy it. I highly recommend this series for any fantasy fan.

Ooo I liked this one. In Heir of Fire, we finally learn more about the Fae, what sort of people they are, what they look like, etc. We get a LOT more of Celaena's backstory, which explains even more about her as a character and why she is the way she is. This helps, because up until this point, she can be a bit much. Speaking of – Celaena gets her ass handed to her in this one, which was needed. It helped her grow as a character, and overall I think the whole of this book was extreme character growth.
I love Rowan. Period.
Definitely continuing to read this series. I'm really enjoying it so far.
