The level of satisfaction with this novel is mainly driven by the author's writing style, starting with the basics - an uber-quick pace, the perfect story structure, and extremely clever plotting (and plotting within the plotting). Then add to that an abundance of very flawed characters, the exact right level of exposition, and some creative self-awareness and you have a top-notch twisty thriller. The biggest reveal is about halfway through the book, so even if one remembers the basic beats of the movie, there is still enough here to feel fresh and a bit of a mystery.
Just finished “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn and holy shit, what a ride! This book is absolutely insane in the best way possible. I couldn't put it down - it was like a crazy binge-reading session from start to finish.
Even though I saw the movie ages ago (like 10-11 years back), I barely remembered the plot. But man, this book had me hooked. The story is so gripping and intense, it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Flynn's writing is just chef's kiss - amazing.
The characters? Totally fucked up, but in a brilliant way. I mean, “Amazing Amy”? More like Psycho Amy, am I right? But that's what makes it so good. The suspense had me going “what the actual fuck” every other page.
Now, I gotta be real - it did drag a tiny bit in the middle. But honestly, that's just me nitpicking. The ending? Perfection. It wrapped up in a way that left me both satisfied and slightly disturbed (in a good way, if that makes sense).
Overall, this book was a total mindfuck, and I loved every second of it. Solid 4.5 stars out of 5 from me. If you're into thrillers that'll mess with your head, “Gone Girl” is a must-read. Just be prepared to lose sleep because you won't want to stop reading!
I'm not sure if I completely like the book. I did not like the beginning- it just dragged on and on. I did not, definitely NOT, like the ending. It seemed like a cop-out, a way way out, non-committal, too yellow to let the right guy win conclusively. Maybe it was supposed to “not be a cliche” ending. Perhaps. I'll say this though - the characters are really interesting, the plot is good and the ending was unexpected (for me), even while feeling inconclusive (my opinion). Definitely not a bad book.
Amy is completely completely diabolical in the strangest most severe way I've ever read in a character. It didn't even feel like Gillian Flynn wrote her but like unveiled her to the world. I really like this book it made me very sad so I can't give it more than three stars. Some of it was just so demoralizing. I just felt so depressed reading it.
3.0
Well that was. Absolutely wild from start to finish.
The writer REALLY knew what she was going with this book. Not only was it compelling from start to finish, not losing my attention for a second, but she does the rare thing of keeping me exactly on track with where she wants me to be in regards of theorizing about the story. I find with most thrillers I'm constantly theorizing, and it's a rare book that can truly shock me because so many tropes have been done over and over again and, while that doesn't make the majority of thriller books bad, it does make them a bit predictable. And maybe this book was predictable at some points, but it was so gripping that you just didn't notice.
I was convinced in the first half of part one that Amy was framing him for being an awful husband. You could ‘see' in her diary entries that yeah he probably deserved all this awful stuff she was doing to him. And then came the entry where he shoved her and made her hit her head, and I thought ‘oh maybe he DID kill her'. And you're thinking this while also sympathizing with Nick even though you don't WANT to because even after you find out most of the diary entries were lies, you know he's still not a good person. Amy is absolutely worse, but you somehow want to root for both of them and also want both of them to go to jail.
The ending was...an ending!! Absolutely wild, I have to give it points for that. I don't know if it was how I would've wanted it to end, it wasn't really all that satisfying, but maybe that was the entire point. Points for being absolutely batshit insane from start to finish; it's hard for a novel to keep that kind of consistency.
What a twisted character. What an amazing mind. Gone Girl kept me guessing almost all the time. A little bit slow for my taste at first, but it gets better as you dive deep into the story and keep guessing what happened.

Rounded down to 2 stars
Summary: On his 5-year anniversary, Nick realizes that his wife is missing and is thrown into a strange plot that seems to implicate him. It is revealed that his wife, Amy, discovered Nick's dalliance with a younger woman and plots a maniacal plan to run away and ruin Nick's life forever
I quite enjoyed part one, where the mystery of where the wife was kept the plot tense and interesting. Once part two started, I did not care anymore about things. I didn't care enough and I really did not like the characters. I really disliked the ending as well. I don't quite get the hype of this book. I felt like the book should have been shorter, but it just kept going and going.
one day you'll read my essay about this book, for now i'll just stick to saying that amy elliott is the best character of all time
Riveting, twisty without feeling unfairly manipulative, dark, and often very intelligent.
Side rant: Hollywood gives us lots of perfect marriages, and lots of terrible ones that implode, but it would be really nice to see more of the role model marriages we really need: couple hits hard times, they have problems and disagreements but communicate well and work through it, and they both choose to stick it out and see the value in commitment.
I found this book interesting, and I read through it pretty quickly. I cannot say that I liked it as much as I liked Sharp Objects by the same author, but it was still an interesting read. I think there were some passages that felt weirdly phrased and out of place, although I can't recall a super specific example. I think the story was captivating (obviously to a lot of audiences, based on the general ratings) but I think the ending was lackluster and didn't give me what I wanted out of the book. It felt like a letdown because the author didn't know what to do with the corner she had written herself into.
Time to watch the film, so I can carefully compare and contrast, just like I did with Sharp Objects
brilliant definitely an all time favorite i love the writing even though i was unsure of it at first but the end didn't disappoint
The first 100 or so pages of this book were a challenge for me to get through. The characters were incredibly unlikeable. I understand this was the author's intent. However, my dislike for the characters made me want to ditch the book. When you aren't able to devote a ton of time reading - why bother. Switching to the audiobook made it much easier to get through because the performances were so compelling. That's the power of audiobooks - they can make the story better. And after reading through the first twist I really wanted to know what happens next. The rest of the book until the last few chapters is great. However, the ending was a bit of a letdown. The story just seemed to fade out.
at first i thought, this is fantastic, nick is a horrible, lazy husband who dulls the shine of his amazing (lolz) wife, and this story is about her reclaiming her life. and it was like that for a while, but it ends up as her being crazy and him being the victim - how so many wives and mothers today are painted by their husbands. there's really no way to justify amy's behavior (the whole framing him for murder part i was fine with, really when she gets desi involved is where it goes off track), and so towards the end i couldn't really root for her anymore. though i cant say i hate the ending; it makes sense, and since got season 8, any ending that makes sense is a win for me
WTF?! Are there actually people out there like this that are THIS eff'ed up??? I was definitely sucked in to the story, but I absolutely HATED how it ended!!!
I'm debating myself on whether to throw a spoiler in here and the no side is winning right now. Although, the yes side is saying, save others from this ending! Ugh!! If someone would like a spoiler, let me know and I'll throw it out there. But for now, I'll leave it out.
I liked the writing, and the characters were well developed.
I can't even begin to estimate the amount of times I have reread this book. It scratches a certain itch in my brain that I can't explain or comprehend myself.
If you enjoy being left on edge, wondering what is going to happen next then this is the book for you!
read for summerween 2022
this book for me i think is actually a 3 star just because of how slow and long it is but there was so much nuance added in the twists and characters that i have to raise the rating. i can also appreciate that this book set the stage for domestic thrillers which makes me give it a higher rating as well.
