this was a crazy ride. seemed predictable at first, then you thought you knew, but you had no idea. then the ending is just, damn. I enjoyed the story, held me from beginning to end and almost binged it in 1 day.
Oh man, I really wanted to this to be as good as Jack Sparks but it falls well short. Its not bad, in fact it starts off really well, but the supernatural element feels like it was stuck on at the end. It's got some really neat bits in it but the ending just didn't work for me and unlike in Jack Sparks where it didn't matter that the main character was awful, in this one I felt it really did matter and I found myself routing for the porn addict in the end.
Kate Collins thought she had finally found the one when she met Scott Palmer. The day before she is set to move in with him, he seems to have vanished. Determined not to overreact, Kate arrives at the apartment the next day only to find no trace that Scott was ever there at all; all of his furniture is gone, except for his cell phone. Intent on finding answers, Kate begins to search through his phone while dealing with the troublesome aspects of her new place: creepy phone calls, scratches on the front door, and menacing blue figures that seem determined to get her away from Scott's phone...
Ghoster is a fast-paced horror novel with short chapters that build the suspense. Although readers may not always like Kate, her voice is authentic and funny enough to keep you invested. A perfect summer read for those already thinking about Halloween.
What did I just read.
I finished it out of stubbornness, to find out what happened. An extra star for originality, because I have definitely never seen that before.
Jason Arnopp's follow up to The Last Days Of Jack Sparks is another social media infused horror novel, MR James with an iPhone. It's another fast paced and entertaining read, but your appreciation will depend a lot on how you view the decision the main character takes which kick starts the plot. I never quite bought it, which overshadowed the rest of the book for me. Still a fun diversion, with some solid character work, if not quite at the level of the previous book.
