So annoying, couldn't pass the first chapter. I know it was based on Cinderella but this idea of a poor woman mistreated by her step mother is so annoying and immature.
This was a cute, sad and sweet Cinderella retelling. Stepmother was officially the worst.

Elle and her father used to fan over the show Starfield. Her father even helped create ExcelsiCon, a convention for Starfield fans. After his death, the show helped Elle feel connected to her father. It was also an escape from her stepmother and stepsisters' spiteful behaviors. When she finds out Starfield is being rebooted, things couldn't be better. Until she finds out Darien Freeman is going to play Prince Carmindor. But despite her doubts, Elle is determined to go to ExcelsiCon this year and enter the Starfield Cosplay contest.
Darien might be famous, but deep down he is a geek at heart. But the life of a celebrity doesn't allow him to go to cons without paparazzi and fangirls tailing him. When he has the chance to play Prince Carmindor in the Starfield reboot, he couldn't be happier. But the fandom doesn't think he is fit for the role. As rumors and gossip surround him, he begins to doubt himself and who he has become. But then he is roped into going to ExcelsiCon by his manager. And while he doesn't want to face the mass of teenage fans, he's going to find something else worthwhile at the con.
I felt for Elle. Every time she tried to get ahead, or choose her own path, her stepmother or stepsisters were in her way. Of course, this goes hand in hand with being a retelling of Cinderella. But it also showed how having a fandom to fall back on can keep a person motivated despite life's hiccups. The Starfield fandom allowed Elle to share something with hundreds of others who understood her love for the show and helped her feel less alone.
Darien's story showed a different side to fandom that I never considered. And while the celebrity angle wasn't as interesting for me, I still appreciated seeing the struggle someone who is a geek may have living in the spotlight. Similar to Elle, the Starfield fandom helped Darien overcome life's barriers.

In this wonderful retelling of Cinderella, the princess is from the show Starfield, the magic pumpkin is a vegan food truck and the ball is the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball. This book spoke to my inner geek! I loved every cheesy line the characters dropped and relived the excitement of conventions through Elle's eyes. I look forward to more geeky retellings from Ashley Poston.
Finally, I finished it! I tried it three times before and I just couldn't get into the story.
Overall I think the book was okay. I loved the modernised idea of Cinderella at a con and I absolutely adored the friendship between Elle and Sage. On the other side, this book dragged. I felt like they reused dialogues and just scenes in general.
Still a three star read though. I'm here for the friendship, the quotes and the con!

this book was super fun at the end but dragged on at the beginning. there was too much ‘fluff' about darien's work life and elle's sad home life but it built up suspense for when darien and elle finally met - great for the slow burn lover in me. all in all, i thought it was a cute retelling of cinderella and an homage to all the geeks everywhere! can't really relate to be honest, but i love the sentiment behind the book. the story was nothing groundbreaking, but definitely heartwarming :)

Tadinya ekspektasi sy rendah untuk buku ini, karena retelling kisah Cinderella. Namun selesai membaca, hasilnya agak diatas ekspektasi, walau ada bbrp hal yg menurutku absurd. Hubungan antara remaja terkenal dgn remaja biasa saja? Jatuh cinta hanya melalui chat ponsel? Itulah yg menurutku agak absurd.

This has to be the best book I've read in 2018 so far. It was so good! The awkwardness and the fun were equal, which made the book sooo good!
I loved Elle. Not for not standing up to her evil stepsisters or texting a total stranger, but because of who she is. She is just like me, a nerd writing fanfictions. I've never been to a Con, but it's high on my list. Elle was fun, she has been written out very well. You just got to love her.
Darien was a bit of a dork as well. Totally a fan of the series but not wanting to admit it to the public. I loved him as a character, but I did not like it that he was kinda falling for his co-star as well. I did not like Jess at all.
I loved the idea of Elle's father who started the Con. I sat with tears in my eyes in the part where she goes to the Con to get her passes. Not wanting to spoil anything, but it was so sweet!
I just got so attached to the characters on such short notice. Also, totally shipping Darien and Elle, they're way too cute.

When I started reading this book I felt like it was a mediocre rip off of Cinder & Ella. The similarities were there: retelling of Cinderella, fangirl, falling in love with a movie star whitout knowing it, quirky best friend, meeting online and/or by phone, that quest to go in to a convention, the book or series that the main character is a fan of getting a movie adaptation and the guy she's falling for online and/or on the phone is the actor who gets to play main male character, the girl has a blog about her passion (book or the serie), the thing she is fan of keep feeling close to at least one of her parent who died, the guy has to date his co-star for publicity, the guy's dad is a controlling jerk, the guy is also a fan but he has to hide it to his fans and the girl writes a post on her blog about the guy who is unfit to represent the beloved character she's a fan of...Yes, there are some differences but for the first half of the book I felt like I was reading a bad fanfiction version of Cinder & Ella. Maybe this is because I loved Cinder & Ella and because I read it first but from my point of view there was almost no deepness to the characters from this book. Also I didn't really felt any particular attachment to the main characters, they seemed somehow flat to me...But if you're looking for a book with a geek girl who loves her sci-fy and who was (almost) literally born into a convention and a cosplay contest, than this is the book for you. Just don't expect much from the main characters because I did and I was disappointed!My favorite parts of the book:- Sage- The Magic Pumpkin- Frank the Tank- The convention (the cosplay contest, the ball)- The bodyguard (of which I can't seem to recall the name)
Sometimes you read a book that was just meant for you. It might not be the best written, or the most unique or win any awards, but it speaks to a part of you that you hold dear and that makes it an instant favourite read. Geekerella felt like that book for me. I am a HUGE geek, I love fantasy, sci fi, anime, graphic novels and of course pop culture conventions. This book couldn't have been geared anymore toward my geeky heart being a modern day Cinderella re-telling about a geeky girl who finds her ‘prince charming' through a fandom and has an amazing experience at a convention ball that is both romantic and also a positive self booster. Last year I read a book that was labelled ‘for geeks', but I was quite disappointed with it, but Geekerella got it right. Not only in the geek department, full of awesome references and a positive ode to fandoms and conventions, but also in its likeable and relatable characters. Even without the geeky stuff, the story itself was really good, light-hearted, positive and fun. Thank you to my friend Carmen for thinking of me when you picked this up and let me borrow it! When so much of the stories out there are dark and depressing, this was a welcome ray of light. Made me think of the days I obsessed over Stargate and Doctor Who and how those shows and their characters influenced me and will forever hold a special place in my heart. Thank you also to author Ashley Poston, a fellow geek who obviously ‘gets it'!
Another book for school, definitely a different take than [b:Cinder 36381037 Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) Marissa Meyer https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1507557775s/36381037.jpg 15545385] with a lot of the same hallmarks: evil stepmother, dead dad, super hot prince, mistaken/concealed identities. . . I definitely have my issues with this book, mostly with missed opportunities for a somewhat deeper story line (Elle's dad neglecting his new family and their resentment over that fact, Cal's character development, Darien dealing with fandom, etc.) but DANG IT, I was grinning like a fool by the end. So, so cute. HOWEVER, and this is probably the silliest nitpick, but at one point Elle's friend makes a Cinderella reference, meaning that Cinderella exists in this universe and hitherto no one has made a Cinderella reference to her before? HER NAME IS ELLE. SHE HAS EVIL STEPSISTERS AND AN EVIL STEPMOTHER. THEY MAKE HER DO ALL THEIR CHORES. I would literally be singing “Cinderelly, Cinderelly” to Elle all day, every day. 3.5/5
This is a super-cute and fun read. It's a great take on the “Cinderella”-type story.
Clean and well-written with endearing characters and outstanding descriptive passages that brought the reader into the world of sci-fi conventions (cons). The author was remarkably creative in her version of classic Cinderella elements (slippers, pumpkins), but by far the best derivation was the fairy godmother who fixes her costume just in time. Cinderella was my favorite childhood fairytale, and I loved this retelling.
Wonderful story. I really enjoyed the pacing of the story.
Elle is a huge fan of an old sci-fi tv series that she loved with her dad who has passed away. The story is being revamped into a new movie and she's not too happy about who they picked for the lead. She writes a very popular blog about the series. She also has a step mother and two stepsisters who treat her like crap.
Darien Freeman is a star of a romantic ya tv series and is also a fan of the show but most people do not want to give him the chance to do really well in it. They never really mention that Darien is black but they do mention that he has brown skin. But I sort of like that because it really doesn't affect the storyline at all.
Elle and Darien accidentally start texting each other knowing very little about each other. Elle doesn't find out that Darien is the guy she has developed feelings for. He doesn't know that she is the one who wrote the scathing review of him.
I enjoyed this book more than I thought it would but not as much as everyone else seemed to. I felt like the beginning was a bit slow and took me a while to get through. Overall a pretty solid read.
“Geekerella” was sweet and enjoyable but ultimately quite underwhelming, mostly because of the protagonists' interactions. The texts they sent to each other were so short, sparse and superficial that their relationship went awfully fast from strangers to ah'blena (which means “my heat” if I recall correctly). Additionally, the inspiration for this book (Cinderella, of course) is not a favorite of mine. The “geek” part in the title was what made pick it up.

This was an adorable quick contemporary read that brought the idea of fandom and how ingrained it can be in your life to the forefront of the story. This book was like Fangirl for me, I saw myself in Elle and I was able to really connect with this character whose life has been utterly shaped by Starfield and the fandom surrounding it.
The book was completely predictable, but it is a Cinderella retelling so what do you expect? But there were still subtle differences Poston added to her story that made Geekerella unique.
Disney meets nerdom in this delightfully geeky Cinderella story. Danielle “Elle” Wittimer is struggling through life with her controlling stepmother and stepsisters straight out of Mean Girls. What she holds onto most is her love of the show Starfield, which is her last remaining connection to her dead parents.
