I really, really tried to finish this book. I was SO close to finishing it and was smart enough to stop when I was at 87%. Although maybe I was dumb enough to continue till that point.
Plot was... boring, not much happens that really grabbed my attention.
Characters don't have much depth and seem to have a set list of actions that they should be doing, and nothing else.
Ex: Poppy tends to swallow her laugh every few paragraphs
I hate the names too- other reviews have already covered this so I don't think I need to.
Don't read it if you're trying to get out of a reading slump.
This was a fun and wild read with really great characters, banter, and action! It starts out very average (I was thinking it would be a 2 star read), but it quickly jumped up to a solid 4 stars; I had a blast reading it.
idk i honestly just like....was not feeling it....like the beginning was interesting but i have been feeling no desire to pick it back up
I can't believe I'm doing this but.... DNF. Not into the first scene when Poopy pretends to be someone else and let's Hawke kiss her. Not into him calling her Princess. It's cringe and creepy and demeaning. Can't slog through this. Yikes.
I hate almost every trope that was used in this book but yeah I guess he is kind of sexy unfortunately
4.5
Felt a bit confused for the first hundred pages or so and thought surely it was over-hyped... but it grew on me despite the messy world-building. What didn't grow on me, though, are the dumb ass names.
However...
Hawke = book boyfriend approved

this book almost put me in a slump. the first half dragged on like crazyy and i almost had to dnf it (and i sorta wish i had). the plot picked up a little but still felt a bit blah. just lots of info dumps and repetition.
overall, disappointing. i heard so many good things about this series. im kinda interested to see where this story goes so maybe the second book is better?
I cannot believe I only just decided to read From blood and ash by Jennifer L Armentrout..
I doubt anyone needs a synopsis of this book. I literally think I was the last person on bookstagram to read it! Haha!!
I got myself a copy from the library and the wait was LONGGGGGG but wow, so worth it. I got catapulted into a world so glorious I didn't want to stop! Firstly I had no idea it was a book about vampires.... That pleased me no end!! Poppy right from the get go was my kind of girl! Felt such a kinship with her! I can't stop asking questions either haha!
I need to know everything about this series now. I love Hawke! I thought the world building and character development was equally balanced and it shows a real talent of the author that she has this kind of skill.
I already finished book 2 and book 3 just came off hold from the library so I know what I'm doing now!
5 stars. I can't believe I waited this long. I should get my head checked!!
Thank you library!!!
started this as a joke to see how bad it was. managed to get 4 chapters in...
really just terrible. prose is horribly amateurish and reads like a teenager's wattpad fanfic, overuse of ellipses is so so irritating, protagonist is insufferable (“I was the Maiden. The Chosen.” ohhh i didn't catch that the other ten times you mentioned it thank goodness you said it again), and what kind of fucking name is PENELLAPHE?
dynamic between poppy and hawke is also sooo uncomfortable lol. i know the plot twist and i will just never see that kind of dynamic as romantic (thousand-year-old immortal whisks away a barely 18-year old girl who is also a virgin and he was her first kiss and i assume also her first time bla bla bla). creepy very creepy
just going to assume everyone rating this above 2 stars is like, clinically insane or something. get well soon! and i mean that genuinely!!!
I saw someone in the reviews say that even though the first 20% of this book was hard to get through, you needed to finish it and they were absolutely right.
I didn't think I was going to read the rest of the books at all but I'm definitely invested now.
Poppy and Hawke's interactions were just 10/10
Loved this

❤️the writing style took me a couple chapters to really get into, but after I got used to it I was hooked
❤️I greatly dislike how everyone treats Poppy as an object rather than a person. It makes me not feel as bad for those who did die even though they were still her friends (bc even though they cared for her, they still thought of her as a thing)
❤️immediately bought the next book as soon as I finished :)
I'm not even mad. Like, I wanted to rise above this book and not like it, but no, I am still the lowly woman I always was and I am addicted. Never mind that the plot made no sense. I have already started book 2.
Well it seems like most people either love or hate this one. I LOVED it. This slow-burn romance fantasy delivered on every level for me. 100% fun.
4.5 or 5 stars
A fun lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers(?) with lots of fantasy worldbuilding too. Poppy is a true bad-ass throughout. Personally, I had a great time imagining Hawke as Halbrand - if you know, you know ;)
Good story building. Very GoT with vampires and werewolves. I enjoyed the first 2 of the series a lot.
The first half of this book was so dry. The second half caught my attention and then BAM it ended.
I saw this book recommended all over but somehow managed to avoid spoilers. Poppy is quietly defiant, fierce, and a rebel in spite of having rigid rules to follow. Her magical abilities intrigued me and her compassion for others showcased her true character. I love a strong female main character and Jennifer Armentrout delivered in a big way.
I absolutely loved Poppy and Hawke's banter and the development of their magnetic relationship. My favorite spicy scene I still think about. The plot twist at the end of the book had me heartbroken and angry.
Jennifer Armentrout did an amazing job with developing the atmosphere of this book. She made you understand the weight of every decisions made by the characters. I love the mythology, magical system, and the culture she introduced us to. I loved the violence as much as the romance and spicyness.
I gave it 4 starts? yes. Of course. It made me laugh, cry a little and scream. It made my heart rise every time Hawke appeared. But there is a “But”... Or several
