It was like if you mixed the top 3 fantasy novels with ACOTAR, this OS what you'd get. Predictable storyline, flat characters, and aggressive smut. Did I know what was going to happen at all times? Absolutely. Did I stay up to read when I should've been sleeping? 100%. AM great time pass or vacation book but nothing more than that

Decent read, got over halfway through. I was intrigued by the concept (I’m a big fan of dragons) and generally liked the storyline.
Now, I’m pretty much in the middle in terms of my opinion on the romantasy genre. I’ve enjoyed it before (I remember really liking the first two ACOTAR books when I read them) and occasionally I still enjoy the reading, and I’m okay with the erotica side of it (though sometimes they make me laugh and most of the time I’d be just as okay with them not being there as having them exist - they’re not terrible but generally they’re just more “there” than enjoyable or interesting imo) but in my opinion, it was just way too overwhelming in this case. It almost completely pushed the actual story line out of focus, and I ended up not finishing because honestly, the story ended up feeling flat and not enjoyable anymore.
If I was a bigger romantasy-specific fan, it probably would have been a great read. I just personally prefer more of a heavy focus on complex, engaging plots and well-developed fantasy worlds with maybe a light sprinkle of romance, rather than just drenching the story with romance.
Overall, started out pretty good and I was hopeful, but turned out to not be for me.

Tried to read this book about a year ago and only got about 20% in, that is because the first 30% of this book is super quick there is not much world building in the first half, I think this is because this is a part of a series so this whole book is anout world building but after 30% this became one of the best books I have read in months,

I absolutely ate this book up I was in a 2+ year reading slump and this book got me back into reading it is such a easy read I absolutely loved it and will definitely end up reading it reading for sure

Is this earth shatteringly well written and super original? No. But it's entertaining and easy to breeze through and sometimes you just want something simple to bring your brain some joy.
Honestly, this was fantastic. I ate up every page—this kind of fantasy world with fights and dragons and magic is bound to be a wild ride, and it did not disappoint. Yarros definitely writes with spunk.
I didn't 100% connect with the characters (didn't cry once reading this which is rare for me...) & while still enjoyably satisfying, many moments felt predictable (except the very very end)

Y'all. This book. THIS BOOK. It was the perfect thing to read after my ACOTAR hangover. It's an absolute ride from start to finish. It's got dragons, badass characters, and just enough angst to keep you turning pages way past your bedtime. The world-building is epic, the tension is real, and the romance? 🔥🔥🔥 Every twist had me gasping out loud. This book is a wild, emotional journey that sinks its talons into you and doesn't let go. 10/10 would recommend – it's the kind of fantasy you devour in one sitting and then immediately want to read again.

Давайте сразу определим, что объективно, без ссылок на жанр, эта книга не очень. По большей части из-за множества штампов последних лет и отсутствия глубины, книга не привносит чего-то нового - только возвращает популярность книгам про драконов. Субъективно - это лютое guilty pleasure, играющее штампами на ностальгии, и где кринжовые моменты даже вызывают смех (хороший). И отличным аудиосериалом, который я обвиняю в том, что мне все-таки понравилась книга. А теперь список претензий, который заставит усомниться в этом!
Мир абсолютно не оригинален - это фэнтези, в котором есть драконы, магия и академия, где этому обучают. Хотя как обучают? Физическую и магическую силы кадетам приходится развивать самим, без какой-либо поддержки учителей, что супер странно.
О магической системе тоже почти нечего сказать, потому что автор поступила гениально - дала возможность появиться любой силе. Но, чтобы ее получить, нужно выстроить связь с опасными драконами, которые запросто могут тебя убить. Драконы могут мысле��но разговаривать, из-за чего они являются отдельными персонажами, но по сути мне нечем зацепиться в них. Чаще всего они представлены как комик-релифы, что, конечно, делает их более яркими, но при этом рушат всю их величественную красоту.
Всё, что удается узнать важного о мире - это произошедшее восстание, после которого дети отступников, чьих родителей казнили, должны учиться в этом квадранте, получить силы от драконов и защищать страну. Стоит ли мне рассуждать как это до смешного глупо? Командование, конечно же, всё понимает, поэтому установило строгое правило - детям восставших (а их отличают метки на коже) нельзя собираться в группы больше трех. Уф...
Но настолько ли плохо выдавать такой минимум лора? Если честно, я первый же человек, который уснет на объяснении торговых отношений между незнакомыми мне странами. С другой стороны - это же фэнтези! У читателя должно быть понимание ситуации в мире, тем более когда персонажи собраны из разных местностей. И знаете как автор решила эту проблему? Вайолет вслух выдает инфодампы во время физических испытаний, чтобы сосредоточиться! Это так смешно, что я ощутимо легче начала отнситься к книге и ее проблемам. Ну серьезно, надо ли все это знать читателю, чтобы поверить в мир?
Что касается персонажей - всё очень шаблонно.
Вайолет по ходу книги из условной заучки превращается в воительницу, чьи скудные физические способности оказываются пригодными для самой опасной работы. И она не ведется на уговоры других уйти в безопасное место, потому что она сама хочет продолжать, чтобы... доказать, что она тоже сильная? Кстати, вы знали, что проявление женской силы - это язвительность? Ведь именно так Вайолет внезапно начинает себя вести рядом с любовным интересом и даже одним из самых сильных драконов. И в ответ они только сильнее заботятся о ней. Но ее хорошие качества вроде как перешивают это. Мне нравится ее упорство и в принципе с ней легко себя ассоциировать, ее проблемы довольно реальны и многим знакомы.
Ксейден - это типичный плохой парень с добрым сердцем и тайнами за душой. И одну из них знают все - он хочет убить Вайолет. Господи, я прекрасно знаю этот троп и его развитие, я совершенно не собиралась на него вестись и первая половина книги сильно помогала мне в этом, но потом... Не знаю, что случилось, но я попалась на крючок. При этом, на мой вкус, о нем правда можно мало что сказать еще, помимо ожидаемых поворотов, но даже так я повизгивала на бонусной главе от его лица и да - мне стыдно за это. Давно не помню представления главного любовного интереса настолько в лоб.
Ну, и еще можно сказать пару слово о Даине. О нет, третий важный персонаж - это тоже парень, неужели любовный треугольник? Лучше не вскрывать эту тему... Обычно я расположена к стороне “друзей детства”, но автор слишком задолбала тропом с заботой, причем абьюзивной. Как я офигела, когда эта заботушка настаивал героине продолжать страдать от сломанного плеча, чтобы она могла перевестись в другой корпус. А как он выбрал правила выше подруги, когда сам сто раз пытался нарушить те самые правила, отправляя ее к писцам?
Со второстепенными персонажами совсем негусто: очень грустно смотреть как автор достает персонажей-ролей ради галочки. Сразу же рождается оправдание - в академии мало кто выживает, было бы странно если бы все друзья главных героев дошли бы до конца. Но совсем не верилось, что им будет Лиам. Он гуд бой, хотя я мало прониклась им как личностью.
Что насчет романтики? Здесь должны быть заголовки из тик-тока про лавхейт, любовный треугольник, предательства, интриги, расследования. Ничего из этого здесь нет. По крайней мере в том количестве, которое хотелось бы увидеть.
Особенно сомнительным оказался лавхейт. Серьезно, когда девушка в ужасе дрожит от любого взгляда парня, думая, что он хочет ее убить - это не романтично. Конечно же потом это меняется на “ты самая лучшая”, “я обязательно защищу тебя” и так далее. Не забывая про буквально крышесносный секс для обоих, никогда такого не было и вот опять. А в конце они испытывают “кризис отношений” с проверкой на доверие. Галочка, галочка и еще раз галочка. Но знаете что? Я съела это. Сначала удивлялась внезапностям и только потом закатывала глаза. Это много стоит, между прочим!
Еще одна спорная сторона книги - это ее “взрослость”. Когда персонажи открыто думают, что им не хватает оргазмов или что в голове вместо внятных мыслей много мата. Это необычно и очень удивительно, но, к сожалению, больше напоминает фанфик, чем литературу. Хотя о разнице между этим спорить уже бесполезно, так как сейчас издается всё.
С другой стороны мы получаем героиню, которая в первой же книги открыто признается в любви. Опустим все насмешки про то, что они просто переспали один раз, и посмотрим правде в глава - когда такое было? Безусловно, половину книги Вайолет проводит в сомнениях и отрицает свои чувства, но к концу она принимает это и говорит об этом вслух. Никогда не думала, что такое заставит меня гордиться героиней.
Еще одним выигрышем для меня стал динамичный темп истории. Почти всю книгу мы проводим в одном месте и, как понимаю, эти 700 страниц отводятся на один год обучения. При этом совсем не тратится время на ненужные события или объяснения, все время происходит экшен или героине открываются новые истины. И это не кажется нагроможденным, так как у нас есть только ее виденье ситуации. Получилось так, что самые скучные части фэнтези были выпилены в угоду истории вокруг одного персонажа, который попадает в разные ситуации и действует в них. И если за таким интересно наблюдать, то так и случается успех. А если же нет - то вам абсолютно точно не нужно читать такую большую книгу, сюжет которой не сможет вас удивить и порадовать.
P.S. Проблема чтения аудиокниги номер один - потом приходится осознавать как все эти чертовы имена пишутся.
A lot of flaws, cliché and tropes, not terribly well written... But I still found it a fun read! Maybe because of the audiobook. The narrator just made it so entertaining.

the book isn't well written by any means, but it is interesting and that alone will keep me reading the series. it has clumsy exposition, violet is a mary sue, and xaden is a much more interesting character than she is. i just don't care for violet. tairn has to be my favorite character. all the other side characters felt flat.
idk. writing this review literally 2 minutes after i finished but it just didn't live up to the hype. this book was marketed to me as a fantasy with a romantic subplot. what i got instead was romance in a fantasy setting with a fantasy subplot. the fantasy aspect comes from the dragons, the world around them, and the powers but the dragons read like humans due to their personalities, the magic isn't at the forefront of anything, and the world building... i'm sorry but the reason this didn't read as fantasy for me is the lack of world building. this comes across as low fantasy and it just wasn't what i was expecting. i started liking the book more when i adjusted by expectations.
this book feels like 2023's version of FBAA.

Me ha gustado no lo vamos a negar, es entretenido y el mundo en el que está ambientado es curioso. La brutalidad con la que pasan las cosas también le da un punto.
La historia no es que sea súper original y está llena de tópicos, en cuanto a los sucesos que ocurren pero sobre todo el perfil de los personajes.
Es como sería un libro de Laura Gallego si le metiera sexo y palabrotas (aunque peor).
Empecé a leerlo en español y no aguanté 5 páginas con la horrible traducción así que me lo leí el inglés al final (ha costado un poco).

This was a lot of fun. There were a LOT of popular fantasy tropes, but when they are done this well it's hard to complain. A little too much combat of all kinds for my personal taste. But will definitely keep reading!
I spent 5 MONTHS reading it, and I actually like it, it was a simply book which I expect more. I mean, nothing against the book, but sometimes it was hard to read, I'm not use to read smut, it's not for me, but I actually try to read everything, every type of book as much I want it, so yeah, you'll understand why I didn't like it that much. So, positive things, it has a map. For god sake, I love when books have maps, it's actually like I can feel like I'm inside the book because I can guide my brain and the pictures that my mind creates. I feel the emotions, but negative things, I never actually felt connected with Violet. I've read other books from the point of view of the protagonist and I always feel like I'm the one who's living it, but this time wasn't like that.

The book was fine. Some parts were poorly written, some parts were better. Overall I have no desire to finish it
The good and bad:
- Violet's character was inconsistent between the first chapter and the later chapters (i kept waiting for her sickliness and TRAVAIL of HEALTH to hold her back but she seems fine?? in fact there seems to be nothing she CAN'T do, apart from being short. but I was disappointed by the delivery, since was such a huge emphasis on her weakness and being sicky in the beginning that I was pretty confused by the end of the first few chapters because that was never actually shown... as being a problem...Cmon, give me actual struggle here.)
- The part where violet tells Dain off was VERY satisfying, Dain SUCKED. Great job here
- The main guy (Xerxes? I think his name started with an X or a Z) very cool, no issues here. romance was fine.
- Mostly just DNF bc I felt like the characters were so inconsistent, especially violet, and it irked me. Also I was gonna have to start skipping scenes because the spice level was increasing lol
- I have no issues with multicolored hair on the female MC but it was giving 13-year-old fan fiction vibes
- Magic system never explained????? Just statements of fact without actual explanations.
- It's obvious from the start of the book that Violet is going to get a cool dragon, so none of that reveal felt amazing - it was so obvious that she was special , and while that doesn't have to ruin the reveal... the reveal didn't make up for it. yes of course she's going to get the mated dragon so her and the ML are even more special. and TWO dragons... idk I feel like I would've liked the story better if she'd just gotten the small baby dragon and had to scrape by with that.
The hype is real (for me.) The pages flew by and I was so sad to finish. I could see a lot of inspiration from Game of Thrones, ACOTAR, and Harry Potter and I wasn't mad about it. Super fun!
I bought into the hype and got this from my local libary to see what all the fuss was about and man I am glad I didn't spend any actual money on this book. The writing was frankly terrible, I've read better written fanfiction, both in actual structure of the writing to the prose itself. Very little of this book surprised me, as soon as the rare dragon type was mentioned I knew Violet would bond with one. As soon as the big black dragon was mentioned I knew that she'd bond with him as well. Both Violet and Xaiden (if that's even how its spelled) were such mary-sue characters. There was such a chance to make more of their characters - have her overcome her physical weakness by anything other than “man up and get stronger” and to have Xaiden have any depth to his character at all would be great.
Special girl character, with her special hair gets special dragons and special dragon magic. And a special love interest.
The ‘romance'. What romance. He goes from hating her to wanting her on the flip of a switch. Their dragons being bonded was a poor excuse.
Sometimes the hype is a smoke screen. I am so glad I didn't spend any money on this book.
