Recommended by my daughter. I loved the Hunger Games elements and I loved the dragons but was turned off by the horny crushing of Xaden and the annoying presence of Dain. Honestly ruined the second half of this book for me. Love Violet’s relationship with Rhiannon and her sister.
i whipped through this i was reading all the time which was rlly lovely thank u to this book for reigniting something within me!!
Flavorless cotton candy. Fast, easy to digest, leaves no lasting impression.
I enjoyed this, but unfortunately I compare all fantasy to TOG and nothing compares. Felt a little copy cat of other fantasy at point, and the world building wasn't anything spectacular. Also, WHY SO LONG!! This was a marathon. Lots of questions left unanswered so I guess I'll be picking up the second one, although I prefer when you want to read the sequel due to the plot not cause the book felt unfinished. Even a book this size. I maybe being harsh - enjoyed overall!
Remarkable. In the beginning, the book made it hard for me to take the characters seriously, because the author spent a lot of effort describing the main character's horniness and obviously fake dislike for her "chiseled" love interest, and it felt very extra to me in the same way that porn often has the most preposterous plot line obviously pushed away by the action that's about to happen.
But as the book went on the characters filled with meaning, the dragons became relatable and empathizing with the good guys became really easy as the action started to heat up.
I ended up really enjoying this one.

It took me a while to get to this book and I don’t know why I took so long! I definitely see the hype. I love Xaden, SHOCKER. Liam… Poor Liam, I will never forgive Rebecca for what she did to my boy Liam. Everyone seems to love Tairn and don’t get me wrong I love that dragon too, he was funny, but Andarna has a special place in my heart, she was too cute.

Jack 🤮 (is an explanation really needed?)
Dain
General Sorrengail
I won’t lie, I disliked Dain from the very start. He just seemed like the type of guy who befriends a woman for the sole purpose of getting her trust and getting in her pants. With that being said, Dain overstepping boundaries after telling Violet that he’d never look into her mind against her will again was not in my bingo card although it should’ve been… I don’t know why I never came to the conclusion that he could be overstepping boundaries until Xaden spelled it out…
In my opinion, the book was great, and it was very entertaining. That ending though, I did not expect it… I saw a spoiler (I didn’t think it was a spoiler at the time) about Brennan and I was SHOCKED. It does leave off with a cliffhanger so it’s a good thing the second book is already out.

It was hilarious that after being kissed by Dain she was just like “Eh, I feel nothing” LMAO

It was a fun read. Not the best writing in any way, but it was still fun and enjoyable 😊

Gossip Girl / Harry Potter mixed with Fantasy . Such a fun read and easy to follow world buildings and characters.
There was some repetitive writing but other than this, great read.
So what?
Just saying.

I feel like the quote "is it really good, or are you just horny?" summarizes this book perfectly.
I had a couple of problems with this book. First, I was not able to generate a picture in my mind of the things and places the author describes. This is an issue I had at multiple points during the book. Wether thats on me or Rebecca I leave up to you.
Second, every. single. character is quirky as hell. They always have that sassy response in the chamber. I find this to be the case in many YA books and many of Sandersons books aswell. I am personally not a fan of this. I do not like people being funny when they are in a deadly situation. How any believable character can see a friend die, turn around and throw a couple of jokes is beyond me.
There are however a lot of things I enjoyed about this book. The concept with bonded dragons, their abilities and the signets they bestow on every rider, I found to be extremely interesting. The school everything takes places in is almost a character in itself.
I DID NOT see that ending coming!
All in all, I found it to be a very enjoyable read and can fully understand why its taken off the way it has.
Forcing myself to read this book gave me hives.
This book is hot garbage. Rebecca Yarris spends the whole book gaslighting you within single sentences, treating her readers like they are morons, repeating words (rucksack, parapet, using “stone” over and over and the only descriptor of the school etc.) over and over, or repeating almost exact sections of diaogue between the SAME two characters on the same very page. Her ability to commit to scale is non existent and constantly changing, for example violet upon first seeing dragons is described as being the size of one of their teeth but this is contested with every other reference to size and dragons that happens later. Now onto the world building- I'd love to tell you literally anything about it but that would require sensible sentence structures and comprehensive description. Instead we get MC reciting lists of lore as an anxiety coping mechanism for about 3 chapters, and then vague non sensical references to the world in the most confusing and unrelated ways. Ordinarily I wouldn't let this bother me except that the MC has allegedly trained their entire life to be a scribe, are supposed to be incredibly smart, and the book is in first person so their really is no excuse for that to be a deficiency other than it to be with Yarris's writing.

Decide, Violet. Are you going to die a scribe? Or live as a rider?
I genuinely adored it. I finished reading the book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. The book was incredibly fast-paced and continuous and the plot events unfolded smoothly; I never felt like it was forced in any way.
Personally, I thought the plot setting was great. I was truly on the edge of my seat, wanting more of the story because of all the different events that were taking place. The quadrants, Gauntlet, sparring, Threshing, Presentation, Squad Battle, War Games, etc.. And the fact that you are allowed to bond dragons, talk to them in your head, have signet powers to wield, you know, there were a lot of such elements that really enhanced the reading experience for me.
“Should I get the wingleader?” Tairn flat-out laughs in my head.
I also thought the characters were great. Each of the characters seemed to have an own personality, and they all contributed in some small way to the book's overall entertaining and refreshing quality. Character dynamics, particularly those involving the dragons, were something I thoroughly enjoyed and couldn't get enough of.
“Quit telling Sgaeyl about my sleep habits,” I grumble at Tairn. “I’m not dignifying that demand with a response.” “Andarna is my favorite.”
I have some theories and there were parts I didn't entirely understand.
1) Violet talks about her father's research on the Krovlan uprising, which involved researching feathertails. Violet adds that she is aware of the location of her father's notes, but she says nothing more about it. So I believe that will be addressed further in the plot.
2) Another observation I made was that venin were said to have red eyes, and in the chapter where Jack Barlowe and Violet were sparring, it was indicated that Jack Barlowe had a red rim around his eyes. So, while I have an assumption that he's venin, that doesn't explain how his powers work within the wards.
3) You're going to be the death of me.
That's a statement that Xaden uses frequently. I can't help but wonder whether that means Xaden will die in future books, which would most likely destroy me. However, if he dies, Violet might also die because of their dragons. Though, I do doubt that Sgaeyl would be particularly affected by Xaden's demise. Or, since Violet has two dragons, Andarna's bond might be able to save her.
Well, those were my theories. Can’t wait to read the next book. I really hope it lives up to Fourth Wing and that I won’t be disappointed.
I put this one on the back burner because it was so ridiculously popular. Finally got around to it, and honestly I couldn't put it down.

This entire book is glued together by clichés and every element seems to be copied from other, sometimes superior, books.
But.
It's written in a way that makes me wanna continue on reading. And I like it when books have that effect on me. Not sure if I'll ever read iron flame though. Spice level was a little underwhelming, but I read a lot of fanfic which might skew my perspective.
A pretty good book with some interesting story beats, I did find some of the 'sexual fantasy' bits a bit out of left field at times though.

This book has a tendency to confuse me about the physical components of any trials violet went through. I genuinely could not conceptualize the gauntlet and was very glad to find detailed fan art of it.
The writing itself was giving YA, which is fine! But the sex scenes didn't feel necessary if that's what we're going for. The characters read as 17-18 year olds, not adults.
I thought the enemies to lovers arc was going nice and slow until suddenly they were both very, very hungry for each other and honest about it out of the blue. I just thought that yearning might stretch a little bit farther. At the same time, it raised the stakes for me in certain moments.
genuinely have no other thoughts right now. it was good and engrossing but doesn't really come close to some of my favorite fantasy. This has verified for me that I've fully rode the fantasy wave this summer and it is abruptly coming to an end for me. I literally cannot take the cringe yet sweet enemies to lovers arcs that materialize too quickly because they-actually-like-each-other-from-the-very-first-moment! I need my man to hate me in order to give af.
