Max Ortis is a Marshall in The City (which for the longest time in the series is the whole world). In a world guided by the Lady and threatened by het brother the Dark Lord the Marshalls protect the city from supernatural creaties from the surrounding Wild who can bracht the protecting ward avond the city. Max used to be in the Order of the Lady, training her small magic to fight against Demons and Dark Magic, but she got expelled.
The City is officially ruled by the council, but unofficially the power is held by the 5 families. The human crimes fall under the normal Law enforcement, who call in the Order or the Marshalls when they suspect creatures or Dark Magic is involved.
The series is easy to read, a tiny bit of romance, no sex and lot of graphic violence. I liked the underlying ideas. But as the story progressed I noticed small inconsistencies that irked me because consistent logic masters to me. I also foundation that even at the end of the series I wasn't really emotionally invested in any of the characters. They were all a bit cardboard, no character depth or growth. It doesn't help that the author has a tendens to repeat descriptions of events, people and emotions a lot. It feels like the main character mostly feels either loads of misplaced guilt or an overwhelming sense of duty and responsibility, where the repetitive ways of describing that adds to the feeding that she is a cardboard stereotype.
