Life in an English Town in the Seventeenth Century
On 6 August 1613 most of Dorchester was destroyed by fire, believed by the inhabitants to have had divine origins. During the years that followed the town became the most religiously radical town in England, with power a reward of religious commitment rather than of wealth or rank.
