She's a doormat, a friggin' doormat! Ugh okay...
So I'm a fan of stalker romances, they usually just work for me. This one? Not so much. The thing is, I couldn't really understand why, which is the reason I kept reading. But I think I've finally figured it out.
1. Her accomplishments are no longer her own.
–Yes, she's smart and she had to have the intelligence and the drive to get where she is, but the scholarship, the internship, the nice apartment, and probably a lot more we don't know yet were given to her by him. She didn't really earn them. So for me, this makes her a little more boring which leads to...
2. Mallory is a boring doormat
She does nothing but work because that's how Paige has been (most likely) asked to groom her. They don't go out which is probably because she isn't allowed to have other friends who might lead her off Miles' path and we see no personality except she is sheltered, hard-working, and wants to impress. She's an absolute doormat because she lets Miles get away with everything AND she feels the need to apology to even Paige when she's done nothing wrong. Some of her interactions are weird with other people and I swear it is because she hasn't been allowed to interact with more people and doesn't know what is acceptable.
3. Miles has the personality of toasted bread
He is a CEO and buys and sells “businesses” and these businesses in particular must be dealt with in order for him to be with Mallory sooner.... right... what kinds of businesses? Why? Just... I rolled my eyes so much. Also, the way he acts with Mallory and pretty much steamrolls her into accepting his way isn't cool. His way only or you are guilted into it. I don't think he has respect for her opinion tbh.
4. The relationship is NOT believable
It just isn't. They rarely talk. She's only known him a week...
5. Their first time having sex pissed me off
We'll throw this under a spoiler He convinces her to go without a condom and then doesn't pull out which honestly isn't a great bc method anyhow but still. I'm not only blaming him though, but her. I wish she had stuck up for herself. I wish she wasn't "lost to lust" and stopped things. My favorite stalker romance [b:Amusement|53908799|Amusement (Dollhouse, #1)|Albany Walker|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1591656937l/53908799._SY75_.jpg|84262241] does this perfectly. He has manipulated and lied to her, but he still respects her wishes AND she feels fine telling him no. Mallory is just swept away~ and damn the consequences~~ I hate how it played out, I hate that we know what plot point is going to come in the future.
There is more. Wow there is more... I guess it is just a lot of little things that piled up because if it wasn't for chapter 17 I probably would have kept reading and given this a 2.5/3 star rating. It isn't horrible if you don't mind the above orrrrr idk maybe your thoughts of everything will be different.
I didn't plan on reading this book because I didn't care for the storyline (guy stalks girl for 5 years and has manipulated every moment to lead up to when they will meet and fall in love), BUT, this was much better than that sounds. The author has a way of making stalking and possessiveness feel sweet, sexy, and romantic. I rated this so highly because I couldn't put the book down. I read it in less than 48 hours, which is wild because I've never had the patience to read that long at one time, but I couldn't put this book down. When I wasn't reading I was daydreaming about what they would do next! Very hot and steamy and overall great storyline. I look forward to continuing the series.
This one was just good for me...not great. Maybe my expectations were too high or something. I found that it dragged a lot and I was bored.
I think the authors could have cut down on the time it took Mall finding out the big secret and spent more time with Paige and Mile's groveling. I hate a heroine that gives in literally hours after finding out most of her life and achievements of the past 5 years were a lie. There just wasn't nearly enough grovel in my opinion. The beginning was super slow, the middle part picked up, but then we went back to the super slow that dragged on and on. I also didn't find Mile's particularly alpha like a typical AR hero. In fact, I found him and Mallory a little on the bland side. AND, because I feel in a particularly picky mood today, I will say I also didn't like that they only had one child Ya, Ya, picky much Eve? What can I say? I like lots of babies
I was just underwhelmed. That said, I think Paige's and Ryan's book sounds WAY more interesting and Ryan sounds like he has the potential of being WAY more alpha. So I AM looking forward to that one...
