I was really excited to read this. But unfortunately, I could not make it through this.
This book follows Jake who opens a strange box containing a severed finger, he accidentally summons a grim reaper to drag him to the Eternal Void. We follow Jake and his gang trying to find the Embassy of the Dead and seek protection.
I think the reason I didn't like this was that it was a little too young for me. I love middle grade but I felt like this is for much younger readers. The characters felt flat and the plot wasn't that entertaining.
I wish I liked this, but it fell flat for me.
Thank you Candlewick Press for accepting my request to read this book as an E-ARC.
Some cute stuff, but a few world building inconsistencies made me move on to other books.
Jake Green received a package from a mysterious stranger. He made the mistake of opening it. It contained a severed finger. Now, a grim reaper is after him. His only chance is to get to the Embassy of the Dead to plead his case before the reaper catches him.
I loved this. It has the perfect spooky vibes for this time of year. The characters are fantastic and I want more.
I received a copy from Net Galley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Look at the cover of this book. What sort of story do you think it will be?
You are right. Scary. But not grownup-horror-scary. Kid-scary.
And that is just what kids want. Ask a group of kids, any kids, anywhere, any time, what kind of stories they want to read and they will say scary.
There are not very many scary stories for kids. I don't know why. And there are very few good scary stories for kids. But this is one of them.

HAHAHA!! What a wonderful book by a wonderful author! I loved Mabel Jones so I was excited about this. From the first page, this awesome book had me enthralled by the mysterious goings-on. The intriguing storyline didn't go the way I expected - it had an unexpected plot twist! This book has it all, including so-awful-they're-funny puns, cryptic characters and mysteries that annoyed me so much I had to keep reading to find out the ending! I can't wait for the next book! 😄📚
