D'Vaughn and Kris have six weeks to plan their dream wedding. Their whole relationship is fake. Instant I Do could be Kris Zavala's big break. She's right on the cusp of really making it as an influencer, so a stint on reality TV is the perfect chance to elevate her brand. And $100,000 wouldn't hurt, either. D'Vaughn Miller is just trying to break out of her shell. She's sort of neglected to come out to her mom for years, so a big splashy fake wedding is just the excuse she needs. All they have to do is convince their friends and family they're getting married in six weeks. If anyone guesses they're not for real, they're out. Selling their chemistry on camera is surprisingly easy, and it's still there when no one else is watching, which is an unexpected bonus. Winning this competition is going to be a piece of wedding cake. But each week of the competition brings new challenges, and soon the prize money's not the only thing at stake. A reality show isn't the best place to create a solid foundation, and their fake wedding might just derail their relationship before it even starts. Where to start with this book? It was wonderful!
Story: This story was an interesting twist on fake dating. The main characters enter a fake dating show where contestants are paired up and need to convince their families that they are going to get married, One character is using the show to come out to her family. The way the author wrote this scene of the story was informative and gave me a different perspective on things. The way we react and the things we say, while we think it is ok, may not be. It wasn't cut and dry, but gave a well rounded perspective.
I liked the way the author wrote the story. The writing was great and I liked the way it broken down. Because it is a reality TV show the story is broken down by weeks. It is told in dual POV including their confessions. This whole story really stands out as a whole.
Audio: The narrator was a fantastic choice for this story. She brought out the personality of each character and made each one feel like a real person. Not just a character in the story.
I recommend this getting this as an audiobook!
Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the opportunity to listen to this book.
I absolutely adored this. I wish we could have had more of D'Vaughn and Kris learning about and getting to know each other but overall it was an absolutely amazing read and I rate based on emotion so it was a 5 star for me
FREAKING FIVE STARS.
Look, I had a terrible week, and today I saw a friend saying they were picking this up, and it was the first day of PRIDE MONTH and I was like, BLACK AND QUEER LOVE AND JOY? HELL YES.
And oh my god, I may not be cohesive about this but, this was everything I've been searching in romance books for a while.
Characters are fully developed and delightful to read, the story feels like something you could live, or hear from someone close, it feels fleshed out and palpable.
The prose is well-written and feels real, and has some beautiful moments. Chencia really knows how to balance playfulness and feelings and serious discussions about gender and gender roles, patriarchal society, homophobia, and race.
The plot makes sense and all the questions that happen during the book are honest questions and discussions.
There's no conflict that doesn't lead to dialogue, and everything is faced with maturity and copious amounts of love from everyone involved.
The banter is IMPECCABLE and the smut is great, I don't even care about smut usually because it's usually bad, here it isn't.
I swear to you the only bad thing about this book is that it ENDS.
