Am I an awful person for hating this? I tried to read this years ago and couldn't get into it, and so I thought I'd try again because everyone and their mother loves it. I have no idea why. This was probably one of my most disliked books of the year; stilted, boring, and awkward. I mean, I enjoy a lot of things other people would find terrible, so I can't judge, but I have no idea why people love this so much other than “Dragons are cool!” Which isn't a bad reason at all, actually.
Dragonflight holds up very well on re-read (after several decades). The story of Lessa, F'lar, and the other people of Pern still resonates. I had forgotten how brilliant, headstrong, and impetuous Lessa is. And vengeful. Don't cross her!
I would probably give this book 4 stars were it my first read. However, I will honor the opinion of my younger self and leave it at 5.
I must say I am surprised at the number of haters this book has gained. Mostly they take the form of “The characters don't think/act like I do, so it's baaad.” I am tempted to write something unkind, but nah.
Good book. An SF classic.
Hmm, I think I missed out by not reading these all those years ago, when my high school teacher/librarian told me I'd like them.
